So,

storm Katie visited over the weekend and my three wheelie bins once again all decided they were drunk and made a break for the rear garden art 1am, falling over and depositing their contents to the neighbourhood on the way and lids banging and smashing.

So I was thinking there must be a simple way of attaching them firmly to the wall so they resist the wind but so they are still easy to disconnect on bin day to take them out to the front. Anyone any ideas? I thought maybe ladder hooks and try and lift the handles onto the hooks but might make getting a full bin off again tricky.

Serious q. The collective intelligence of OOF must be up to the challenge of a solution.

Cheers all.

A pair of screw eyes and a bungee strap. Keeping our bin against the wall for 10 years and counting! The recycling bin lives in the meter cupboard just outside the front door and under the porch so we can lob stuff over the top of the door in all weathers.

solved this problem many years ago. Bolt eyes into the wall either side of the bin, tie a cord/string/rope to one end and have a hook on the other. Put bin in place, run cord round bin to other eye and hook it on.

It's an easy fix but what can you do when it's bin day and it may be at the roadside with nothing to wedge it against for 8 hours?

Sounds cunning. I'll add 6 to my list. Presume Im gonna need a rawlplug in the brick work/mortar to screw in the eye after drilling?

Another good question. If its held in place the bin men wont "unhook" it to empty it I'm betting.

I use cord because my bins are in full sunlight for most of the day and bungees don't last long.

I know someone who used to work on the bins (this was in NW Scotland, but I'd guess the same applies elsewhere). He said the thing binmen really dislike when people secure their bins for collection are bungees. Understandably they aren't keen on getting twacked by them. If you need to secure them for collection, polypropylene rope is probabably the best way, with biggish loops so it is easy for the binmen to unhook.

I have a similar arrangement (y)

pfft. we left our bin bags a few meters up our driveway before in a little bit more shelter from the wind and they didn't take them. apparently its more preferable to let them blow into the road and get run over (people never go around them) scattering the contents up and down the road.

Yup. I went to the (fairly minimal) extra expense of using stainless steel eyes to prevent rusty streaks down the wall. Toolstation or Screwfix sourced.
Ours is at the house end of the (short) drive and must be taken to the roadside or the bin men won't take it. If it's particularly windy and we're around, I leave it secured until the lorry arrives then take it out for them and bring it straight back.
Good point from Hugh/Steep about bungees having a limited lifespan outside in sunlight. Ours is shaded for most of the day, against a North facing wall. IIRC, I replaced it a couple of years ago when the original bungee gave up. It was about 30 years old though! I used bungees rather than rope/cord since I have loads (Dad used to sell them, many years ago) and it keeps the bin held back without the faff of knots!

The times I've woken on recycling bin/tub day to the sound of tin cans rattling down the street.

you wanna live where i do ,top of a hill facing the irish sea with nothing at all in front of the house ,it ALWAYS blows a hooly on bin day ,and up here we have a black wheelie bin for general waste ,a small light blue bin for glass ,a woven bag for plastics ,same for tins ,same for plastics .you only need a good storm (every two weeks on the dot) for it to be everywhere .
don't help with the attitude of the bin men these days ,i can remember when a couple of quid tip and they would take away half the house ,these days they would rather throw it in the road than in the van .sounds like its a national disease though

Keep them in your sitting room and when you turn the telly off at the end of the evening you'll have a last memory for the night of putting them out first thing in the morning???

Maybe not :)

Brilliant idea for a thread though!! Made me smile!
