I found this french meteorological model showing predicted wind gusts. at UK locations..animated. I'm 5 miles from Lizard and the gusts here are predicted to reach 80mph. The worst areas at risk of these gusts , looking at this model, (purple) are from SW Cornwall(purple..130kmp..81mph) into Devon. Along the south coast...deep red. 110......68mph in some places embedded in a red area 85kmph..52 mph which turns NE to the Wash. It's very windy here now...1748. The worst comes from midnight. The groundsman here has been called in to move all outdoor furniture to a secure area. Not all models agree re the strength of the winds or the gusts but the Met Office has predicted 80mph here and 26ft waves.

You can see what it's likely to be in your area. Top left is the timing..goes a bit fast but readable. Obviously, the words for gusts in french are Rafales de vent.

As it's in kmph here's a calculator https://www.metric-conversions.org/speed/kilometers-per-hour-to-miles-per-hour.htm

A few examples to save going to calculator.

70kmph....43mph

75 kmph...46mph

80................50

90...............56

110.............62

120...74.5

130....81.

2217.. Swansea.. 70/kmph wind..43mph with 100/kmph gusts..62mph. Just a bit less here in..near Lizard and the peak isn't for another 3-4 hours. There's a large tree outside our cottage made up of many trunks rather than branches and if it sounds like it does now I dread to think what it will be like at 0100-0300

No wonder there's a 'danger to life' warning with this storm.

Sounds like you should camp out in a room on the opposite side of the house and prep a "grab bag"......as a precaution???

Main storm seems to be missing us in Scotland but it looks like snow tomorrow,

The alarms went off at my lads restaurant ,blew a roof hatch open .. he went down and made it secure but said there were trees down in the area ..north wales

I'm in St Austell, so a fair few miles away from JohnC6, the OP and it is VERY windy here, noisier than I can remember..

Looks like we could be in for winds of up to 85mph down here in the south east.
I expect there will be some damage to buildings if it reaches that. We tend to design for a 1 in 50 year predicted storm in the UK, which is a wind speed of 21m/s, or 75kph for the SE.

Pretty tame blow over here in the irish midlands [passed over us on way to you lot], one of our bins got KO'd, other than that it was just slightly rougher than typical Irish winter weather - and we were in the Orange warning area. A lot of times when these warnings go up, next day I awonder are we in some 'safe pocket'? because it's never as bad as they tell us it might be

Very noisy here (sussex coast) and my static home is vibrating!!!!

Going to get worse over the next 2 hours ...

Our fences came off badly in the high winds pre Covid19 and since then poor timing has meant they have yet to be fully renewed....a few panels I had to jury rig to make them safe. So just hope we don't see more damage come daylight!!! ???

Lots of reports of trees down here and we’ve had several power cuts.
My weather station is showing 40-45mph gusts, but it sounds more. Wind seems to be do coming from the North East, so the station might be a little bit sheltered by the forest beside the house. The windows in the bedroom which are much higher than the station and facing direct to the wind are shaking with each gust. The 4g antenna has already vanished off the roof.:runaway:

Hope everyone came through safely and without too much damage.

Pretty rough night ... not much sleep because of the noise.

Seems to be ok apart from one of my olive trees had disappeared from view, but had luckily only fallen over in it's pot and got wedged without being bowled off down the site! A few branches broken on the tree opposite ... all minor in the overall scale of things.

Quite noisy here (Exeter) but an ear-plug blocked it out. No damage visible.

It was a wild night here also, very much in land. It was gusting to 60 mph apparently!
And very wet with it.

It seems to have blown itself out here at least, woke to clear sky's and a light breeze ...

I took the precaution of having the torch to hand. In the event we were ok..but..a couple of years ago we were here and had a similar storm. I was sitting in the armchair in the afternoon looking out into the cove..it's floor to ceiling windows ..5m long 2.5 high..when there was a huge crash. We were lucky. One of the trunks had been torn from the tree close to the cottage and it crashed onto the gutter and the whole of the patio with such force it buckled a 4' length of the steel 4' high railings around the front edge of the patio. There's a steep drop down to the garden which itself slopes down to the cove road. It blocked the whole of the glass front which includes doors so we couldn' get out and had to call the owners who live on site. The branches were so dense with the foliage we couldn't see beyond it. ..and it's a lovely view..lol. Within an hour tree surgeons came. They cleared the patio and returned the following day to cut down other trunks, especially those leaning towards the cottage. It's a huge tree,a type of fir tree and like many here in Cornwall flattened branches on the top by the westerlies.

Found the bbq in the middle of the lawn this morning! Not a little light one either, a big 4 legged charcoal one With a lid and side racks.
Not entirely sure how it managed that, as it’s down steps and it was tied to a tree, but hey ho.

Sounds like you had a very local high end gust. I can only see that we'll get more of these named storms and on a more frequent basis and probably more severe. We have a large bbq too..on wheels and the cover blew off during strong winds not long ago so we play safe and bring it inside when very strong winds are forecast and,of course, named storms.

Its still a tad damp in places here

I've been thinking about this. There were no reports of tornadoes that I heard of but it would have to be a reasonably strong one to get your large ,heavy.'expensive' ..BBQ onto your lawn and it would have caused a lot of damage which you'd have heard about. So, taking into consideration where the BBQ was..ie down steps and tied to a tree, I'm wondering if someone knew it was there and took advantage of the storm noise to try and nick it but found it too hard..maybe because of the very high winds or found it too difficult on his own ..hard to push on wet grass..or was unable to get it out of your garden. I'm suggesting this without any knowledge of your precautions but maybe it's something to look at. A high, solid ( 8'..?.) padlocked side gate would be a good deterrent. In the Forest of Dean..my sister lives there, near Coleford..having motion security cameras would be impractical due to animal movements..cats, wildlife....boars ? (lol). Etch your postcode onto it or some other identifying mark. He/they may try again.

Just a thought.

We have motion activated cctv front and back, 7 foot fences on 3 sides with another few foot drop on the far side and a 20 foot hedge the other side, no one could get in the garden even they wanted too., which round here is very unlikely anyway.
Besides the bbq was further away than it originally from the only exit, so unless they planned on having a feast, I don’t think that’s viable.

I can only assume the bbq cover acted as a sail and dragged it down there.. annoyingly the camera didn’t pick it up As it’s set for humans only.

Well, that's excellent security so you're probably right re the cover acting as a sail.

We've got two thick elasticated bands around our bbq cover which have remained in place through recent high winds.
