Something that we all should be aware of, have a read of this.

Interesting reading Dave - thanx for the hu ! :thumb:

Suppose we should all automatically make back-ups ... but how many do so on a regular and routine basis ? I know mine are ad hoc, apart from work stuff which is backed up every time I log onto our system. :smilenod:

Local drive stuff ... e.g. my photos are on a 40GB back-up hard drive whenever I think I need to ! But I don't (yet) do magnetic and optical ... :Ponders:

I do make regular backups - also to optical aswell as external storage, also when possible usually have some stuff stored on my computers at work.

Its so simple to setup an automated backup process in Windows that theres not much excuse, storage is cheap - maybe not cheap cheap, but compared to what it used to cost. External HDD £50 for 40Gb, internal HDD £30 for 80Gb, optical media costing pennies.

Once you get into a routine you will hardly notice the hassle:)

Also another tip is occasionally test your backups, both after making them, and also after a certain period of making them - alot of people make backups that are unsuccessful, and only discover this when its their last chance. And as mentioned in the article many backup media can deteriorate over time.

Good heads up DaveyUK:thumb:

been there, done that! :getmecoat i now always use nero's verify data function, it takes twice as long, but what's 5 mins anyway ;)

I write all my images to DVD/CD and store them. I do use disk on my server sometimes but primarily on DVD/CD.

I am thinking of getting a Lacie 250Gb drive for my mac mini as it's the same shape/size so won't take much room up and give me additional firewire and USB ports.

Carl.
