Storing 35mm negs

If you want my honest opinion... digitise them!

Do let me explain though, it's not meant as sarcasm. I've been into photography (purely as a hobby) for pushing 50 years now, and in many ways you can't beat film. There's something tangible about actually having negatives, they're a physical reality unlike a digital file which only exists as a magnetic image on a disk.

Having said that, negatives do deteriorate. I kept mine in folders, in files especially designed for the job. Over the years they did suffer, until eventually I spend months and months scanning them to digital. At least I know that now they won't get any worse, I can clean them up in (say) photoshop, and as long as I have adequate backups they're safe from further deterioration.

Obviously you can have both, keep the negatives and the scanned image(s)... keep one copy off-site just in case!

Hope that helps...

cheers

Kenro translucent negative sheets for me. The folder is outrageously expensive for essentially a slightly fatter and wider ringbinder, but I couldn't find any alternative which wouldn't damage the edges of the sheets :(

I use Print File negative sheets, which are available in packs of 100. Of all the different makes I've used in the past, I've found these to be the easiest to slide negatives in and out.

I also buy archival ringbinder boxes from the same place and these will accommodate your neg sheets nicely. Not cheap admittedly, but very good quality.

I would certainly say avoid the Kenro clear acetate sheets, what a nightmare to try and get a negative in to one!

I've ordered some glassine ones frm AG along with some chemicals to see if they're any better.

Kenro sleeves, each roll numbered & indexed with film type, date, place(s) & any important frames. Rough scans with an Epson flatbed thingy (pretty much a digital contact sheet) & important frames done with Hasselblad Flextight. Everything indexed with film type, date, place & important frames. Makes it easy to find stuff :D
