Storage

With that solution, your computer needs to always be on. With a nas, you just don’t have to worry and it just works.
Different folks, different strokes.

I use an old Macbook as my server and three drives are attacked to it pretty much permanently, so I suppose it's more or less a NAS without the name. The Macbook is a 2012 model so it owes me nothing and the 2TB drives cost about £220 for the lot.

Not sure what version of OSX that’s running but I assume it no longer gets security updates? If it doesn’t, there’s no way I’d have my data reliant on that and certainly not connected to the internet.

I also subscribe to to the 3 copies, one off site theory. I run a NAS locally, which backs itself up to the cloud overnight and I run another copy weekly on another hard drive which is kept in a detached outhouse.

Everyone has their own views on what's correct and what is not.

In my experience, there are many ways to secure your data and there is nothing that suits all needs. There are also many ways to lose your data and I've witnessed more than one of the real humdingers.
