Hey guys,

What are the best options out there for storage? Getting fed up at this stage of picking up a 500gb hard drive just when I get low on memory on my Mac. Looking to improve my system here and I don't know if a load of hard drives lying around is the best way of doing things!

Cloud storage? I use Zenfolio for all my wedding images and the account I have costs me around £100 a year and provides unlimited storage. I upload all hi-res Jpegs to client galleries that are password protected and have viewing expiry dates. I do also store everything on Raid drives in the office but the cloud option sounds like it would duit you?
 
If it's a desktop, then I would install larger (multiple) internal HDs.

If it is a laptop, then I would go for larger external HDs. :shrug:

I wouldn't go to a cloud option for too much information, because the upload and download speed may not be up to moving lots of information at any speed. And of course, you are reliant on having an internet connection. ;)

Also, the reliability of the company hosting your images for speed of download, or even to stay in business. :bang: Use as a cloud option for an extra backup, but not as your only backup option imho.

My router has bit the dust in the last two months, and the ISP has gone down 2-3 times in the last year. If all my information was on a cloud, my info would have no longer been accessible to me at home.

Why not use larger drives - 2 or 3 TB?
 
You could also get a small Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, pop in a couple of hard drives and connect it to your home router. You can then access the images from any computer on your network. Most with 2+ bays already come with RAID 1 built in which will fill your 2nd drive with a copy for redundancy - just in case one drive fails :)
 
What age is your Mac. If it's a late model you may have both USB3 and Thunderbolt connections. A USB 3 2Tb drive would be fine, or even larger if you can afford it. Thunderbolt is fine but more expensive and I doubt if you would get any real benefit if it's just a single additional drive.

If you have and earlier model you are probably limited to USB2 or Firewire. Now USB 2 drives are fairly inexpensive, but can be a bit slow at times. Firewire ( especially 800) is much quicker, but again cost more. Again go for at least 2TB or more if funds will stretch.

NAS is a good option. Again go for as big a drive as possible. However remember that you are connecting via your wireless network, so this may ( will) impose some speed restrictions. If you go down this route look at getting a NAS drive that offerers a Gigabit Ethernet connection. This will give much faster data transfer via the wired Ethernet. Use this to connect to your Mac and leave other devices to connect via WiFi
