my folder 'images since 2009' is only 5GB

dont see i need another 320GB HDD....£60

are there any tech reasons against long term storage/write/rewrite to a say 16GB Flash drive..@£16

If that's all you have you could get a Hotmail account and upload them all to SkyDrive (25Gb FREE).

You do need to have Silverlight installed so you can do batch uploads but it's a piece of cake - and for other things as well.

DVD doesnt have a limited life persay (well they do but it can be up to 100 years depending on brand and quality), but it is very vunerable to poor storage conditions and can rot with the wrong handling.

blu-ray is documented to have a similar lifespan but is not vunerable to environmental issues due to different contruction.

remember hard drives also have an average lifespan (mean time between failure, like a shutter does) so its all swings and roundabouts really.

personally id favour multiple hard drives, and if you can store a copy away from the main site (i.e. drawer at work, parents house etc) in case the worst should happen to your home.

I'm not sure about Blu-Ray because it's a fairly young storage medium compared to DVDs and there's a lot of horror stories online about the limited lifetime of data burnt to Blu-Ray discs.

Having said that I do have a Blu-Ray burner and I'll be doing some tests to compare the lifespan of Blu-Ray discs to DVDs when exposed to light etc.

I know that my DVD discs last at least 5 years when protected but rapidly become corrupted when exposed to sunlight etc.

CDs do seem to last longer.

I've just picked up 2 x 2tb internal drives for less than 140 delivered, so they are coming back down in price if you're going to go with the standard hdd and caddy route.

What make are they and where did you get them from?

I am just a noob but here what I have to save my photos:

Download to PC (immediate)
make copies to another 500 GB internal drive (immediate)
make copies to another 1TB external hard drive (immediate)
make copies to a tape drive (yep I still use those ) - Timed weekly
make copies to DVD - timed monthly

my next purchase probably a NAS drive.

Yes I do - as mentioned before Hotmail provide 25Gb storage for free - it's called SkyDrive.

Peter, they are Samsung drives with a 3 year warranty.

I got them off Amazon, although they're only 5400 rpm drives they're more than fast enough for use as a back up and surprisingly quiet inside the drobo.

I already use the Samsung Eco Green ones in one of my PCs and find that they're quite fast if used with my Barracuda 7200Mb main system HD.

Looks like they've gone back up a bit now (£81 or £89 depending on type) but they should come down again after the new year (hopefully)

Cheers - yes Amazon has excellent service and I usually use them for a great deal of my purchases simply because they seem to care far more about their reputation than a lot of others.

Agreed, I opted for the super saver on the drives as the drobo unit they were to be used with wasn't supposed to be delivered until the 29th even though they were all ordered at the same time. I was really surprised when yodel delivered everything the next day.

Double nectar points was an added bonus

presently using Karens Replicator [advice from here ] with my 320GB ex HDD
scheduled backup every 24 hours only those files I have added/deleted/changed --- very fast

managed to get a 160GB external HDD from here yesterday
dont know yet what will happen when i unplug 320GB unit and plugin 160GB unit....:shrug:
hope it stays as drive 'D' as Karen copies to D:\folder name 01\file name

What NAS did you go for?

I went for a netgear readyNAS duo, the synology are better I believe but this does everything I need and was cheaper. At the time there was also a deal so I got the first 1Tb drive for £30 which really swung it for me.

The only thing I found with netgear was they were terribly slow network transfer speeds. Also watch their support its shocking, hence I sold both my units and went synology, much better performance and support.

Thanks for the heads up - my unit is wired into my router and then wireless over the rest of the network so transfer speeds aren't going to be quick anyway and I'm not worried about support it's linux based and I'm comfortable with sorting it out myself

Looking for an enclosure for a 2.5 Hard drive and one for a 3.5 Hard drive. 2.5 needs to be for IDE and SATA. 3.5 Just SATA. Any recommendations?
