Yes
I am off on holiday on xmas eve, I have a 2gig card and several others adding up to another 1 gig but I doubt if this will be enough.
I was going to take my external hard drive with me but it weighs a little to much and pushes my hand luggage over the barrier.
I have thought of several alternatives but thought maybe the members may offer alternative ideas.
Can anyone recommend a good site where I can upload my photos too whilst on holiday... I have a flickr account, but not sure on it's merits for storing my RAW files.

Much appreciated

Shorn.

not sure about a site , but I would buy 2-3 ,4 gb cards this should be enough . go through the pics at night and delet the ones you dont want. I have just bought 2 from 7 dayshop

When you said external drive how would you be connecting that to the camera? I'm thinking you could get a 2.5" drive and usb caddy reasonably cheaply which would be lightweight and probably a lot less expensive than the net fees all that uploading would cost.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking I may have left it a little to late for a purchase to arrive.

This sounds ideal and maybe cheaper than 2-3 4gig cards, what exactly or more to the point, where would I get such an item, also I will have access to PC's whilst I am in Thailand, every other building has a pc in it :)
Never thought about a direct connection to the camera though??

Hi Shorn,

If you have access to fast internet on your trip:

with Pando.com you can send any number of full-sized photos/files upto 1GB per 'shipment' to any eMail address. Like your own.
With Podmailing.com you can send unlimited size files/folders!
(But you need a really fast internet connection!).

If you use either, your photos will already be safely back home while you are still on holiday. Even if you 'lose' your camera gear, your photos are not lost. If there are shifty authorities 'impounding' your photos, let them! They're already in your mail back home!

And after uploading your photos from your full card to a PC and having despatched them to your eMail address, you can erase the card and use it again. And again. And again.

So take your cam cable/dock along on holiday!

OTOH: memory is cheap, these days. So it doesn't make sense to skimp on it. Get another big card too!
Flash memory is the most secure storage means by far. So you could do both: send your photos home for secure backup as well as saving them on your memory card(s). Even if something happens to the latter, you will still have your photos waiting for you at home.

Have fun!

Hmm, I didn't spot the xmas eve bit, rickj might have the best solution and I'm sure you could buy them cheaply in Thailand.

Thanks very muchly for all your replies and suggestions.
I am going to follow all the links and I am sure I will have this storage problem cracked.

Once again, thanks for the help, I knew I could count on these forums.

Will make sure I upload a few pics whilst away :)

Have similar device, not much larger than an ipod and very handy if cards are in short supply. Mine charges via usb or adapter. Most cards cf/sd etc simply plug in, push copy button, files transfer into incremental folders. For the price of a few card, well worth it.
Alternatively if you have an large enough mp3 device you may be able to transfer your files onto it via a computer. Aldi also do a £7 combined card reader/usb port that may be handy.

Isn't it amazing that sometimes the obvious is not looked at.
I have been chatting with a friend in Thailand, very computer literate and very down to earth.
I asked him a similar question to what I asked in here and his reply was.......
Take a dozen dvd-r's with you and copy the RAW files onto them when necessary.
I honestly had not thought about this possibility.
So if all else fails I can stick them on dvds :)

Its an answer and will probably work - but home made dvds cause lots of compatibility problems when used in a drive that didn't write them. Mostly it will work, but I've got a mate who's pc simply refuses to read dvds I write for him. But dvds he writes work fine on my pc.

I don't mean to **** on your bonfire, because the best solutions are often the simplest. But I've got an Epson P5000 for this purpose. Sure, its expensive. But it works. And by a cunning system of having that, lots of CF cards and a couple of USB sticks I usually manage to come home with at least 2 if not 3 copies of each pic. It may be a bit anal, but, you're not really backed up unless you've got 2 reliable extra copies of your data.

If your budget's tight, I would invest in more CF cards.

You can get a 4Mb card for under £40 on t'internet!

When memory cards were still expensive (funny we tend to forget that so quickly, isn't it?), I used an iPod for portable storage. Plenty GBs of space there!
Though not as secure as flash memory card, remote backup, or CDs/DVDs, of course. iPods are crashable harddisks too, after all.
