storage headache - DONT USE NETGEAR

And this is where recommendations on the Internet need to be taken with a pinch of salt. We've gone from "the best thing ever" to "go to hell" in 5 weeks.

If you do look to move, my Synology NAS has been running fine for 2 years and I am in the process of upgrading it to 4x2Tb drives (slowly to try and avoid getting drives from the same batch in the unit)

I must admit I have not read the whole thread, but surely you should be able to get a replacement brand new unit from the retailer if not from Netgear?

I'd be kicking up hell with the retailer as well if I were you.

Netgear's attitude clearly stinks though. I'd have expected far better.

dont get me wrong the kit itself is good. however netgears attitude to replacement kit is sickening.

Regardless of that, the item sold was not fit for purpose.

Keep on at them, Neil. Someone needs to replace this with a new unit.

Do you not have grounds to take this up with Trading Standards? If a unit is faulty surely it should be replaced by a brand new unit?

unfortunately i think that only applies to the seller rather than the manufacturer.

im going to contact amazon now and see what they say.

still concidering selling up, cant be doing with this hassle if i ever get another fault..

Doesn't sound good at all, and I have just purchased a Netgear Stora. Hope its resolved Neil

The way it works in this country is that your contract is between yourself and the seller, and it's the seller who should be approached in the first instance for any problems or replacements. Amazon are pretty good on this stuff, though not sure if it was bought via a seller on Amazon rather than direct.

Alternatives I'm considering are Synology and Qnap. Both seem to be highly regarded. I'm looking for a NAS with some grunt though, i.e. with an Atom processor (a little more processing power but still low power in watts and quiet/cool). Reason being because I want to replace my old K6-2 desktop server sat in the cupboard which runs a mail and webserver, and have plenty of storage, but in a small and quiet device. Ideally with no fan based PSU as I seem to blow through these frequently (guess it's the dust collecting on it and running 24/7). A power brick PSU would be preferable.

yeah im just appaulled that maunfacturers can get away with giving you refurb kit in exchange for defective. speaking to my dad last night his insurance for his iphone through o2 wanted to do the same for a knackered screen.

got a Synology DS1010+ on order now, will be seeing how that goes next week

Well, the price of the ReadyNAS NV+ is back over £300 once more. Just as I was considering it!

I'm half torn between a NAS such as the NV+ and a DAS such as the Drobo.

My Macbook Pro is my main computer and although I've upgraded the hard drive to 500GB, it's simply not enough to hold everything. So, I need some form of external storage which is at least as fast as USB2 and on which I can store my Lightroom images. I'll also want to be able to back-up this file store onto a separate device which I can keep separately.

I'm not too concerned about having the file store on the network since I won't need to share it with anyone and especially because the router and my Macbook are at wirelessly connected across the length of the house.

So, I'm considering something I can just connect directly to my Mac such as a Drobo.

Will, I bought a new iMAC a few months ago and storage was a concern for me and I looked at a number of solutions. Whilst it wasn't the cheapest option I went with the 2TB Apple Time Capsule.

I have it stored out of sight in a cupboard and it backs up my machine every hour via Wi-Fi connection. I may grow out of this during the next year (the output files from my new camera will be huge) but by then I'm hoping they will have developed a 4TB version.

You can also connect a standard HDD to the time capsule so that can act as additional storage or backup the backup :-)

I think the only cheap option is offline storage via Blue-Ray discs.

It's bang out of order with Netgear but your contract is with Amazon as the company you bought it off so technically you should have sent it back to them. Problems is that they would have returned it to netgear and it would just have taken longer for the same outcome!!

I used lots of Netgear stuff years ago that is still working now when they used the rectangular blue boxes for stuff eg printer servers and hubs but their recent stuff is nowhere near as good.

I was going to run one of these but bought a second hand proliant server instead and installed FreeNAS. There is space for 6 SATA drives plus 2 IDE drives with FreeNAS installed on an IDE drive. Like you were saying earlier though far more space and noise than you want!!

Yeah its gone back to amazon for refund now fortunately.

Let's hope synology are better lol

It will be interesting to see what they are like. To be honest I fancy replacing the proliant with something a bit more efficient and would like the option of 8 Tb of space. 2Tb drives coming down is helpful, wonder when 3/4/5Tb drives will be out. I could use two bays in the Mac Pro as 2nd backup for 4Tb

I went with the Drobo in the end and have it directly connected via Firewire. With 3 of the 4 slots filled with 2TB Western Digital Green drives, I get 4TB of protected storage. I've also got a Western Digital MyBook 4TB drive daisy chained to the Drobo via Firewire.

The Drobo I use as primary storage and I use Carbon Copy Cloner to mirror it onto the MyBook.

I still have Time Machine backing up my MacBook's internal 500GB drive to a separate 1TB external USB drive.

Also storing a copy of my images off-site on another external USB drive.

I had considered Blu-Ray for archiving, but with ever changing formats and capacities I decided hard drives would be a better solution. Also, I'm a little weary of the Blu-Ray discs longevity and fragility.

They get a very good writeup so touch wood..

I think its overclock.co.uk selling samsung 2tb for 82?

Sean - that's good to know

QNAP = Happy Happy Joy Joy or me.

They aint the cheapest but when it comes to data storage doesnt make much sense to leave it to the small guys :)

Exactly, would you buy a smart price parachute ?
