been discussed quite a lot but ideally you should be backing up to 2 separate physical devices in case one fails.

as for makes of drive, depends on your budget but a samsung 1tb/2tb drive in an icybox enclosure is pretty good value.

Amazon have 1TB Western Digital USB drives for around £45. As Neil says, you should always have your files stored on two separate physical devices - and make sure that you keep them in sync with each other.

You don't say what your budget is, but I bought a Drobo and 4 WD Black 500Gb HDs and it works a treat.

If you want something reliable then i would always recommend Western digital drives, such as green wds20ear one i've got 2 in my hptc and works a treat. Then purchase an external caddy to hold it in.

These two combinations are much better than the off-the-shelf type you can buy in any electrical retailer.

I backup on to a mirrored NAS, which was then backed up to a Samsung S2 1TB USB3.0 drive. I've now sold the Samsung (although it was a lovely bit off kit) and backup offsite.

I've installed a few Synology NAS devices, as it's a network device it's not the fastest but does have an excellent feature of being able to backup it's contents [scheduled so can be a delayed backup] to an attached USB drive, giving you a second copy or third if you the NAS setup as a RAID 1.
If a NAS isn't for you, I've heard a lot of positive things about the DROBO but as already mentioned make sure you have a second copy of your data stored on another drive

id recommend the samsung spinpoint drives, ive used both the F1 series and the F3's and ive -never- had any problems with them AT ALL

seriously, samsung make good drives

How about 3.5" bare drives and a single/dual docking station with eSATA connection. I have about ten drives stacked up in protective cases that hold my backups, 2nd backups, archives, photo collections and some other stuff.

I can vouch for backing upto two seperate drives, I've come a cropper in the past. I was very fortunate to be able to recover data though.

A nas is good as you can connect to it from a remote computer ect.

Thanks for all the replies Guys.

Must admit I'm a bit lost with the setting up the technical side of it, so a couple of external 1TB WD's is maybe the way to go for now until I know what I'm doing.
At the moment, it's nothing special I'm trying to save, just clearing hard drive space.

Thanks again...

I use a backup HD with Time Machine - and I've uploaded some of my best pics at full resolution to my flickr pro account and set them to private.

I would recommend a couple of drives too and copy the files from one to the other. SyncToy is a free app from Microsoft that allows you to sync files accross two drives. When (not if) your drive fails you will lose data possibly all of it. Might happen today/next week next year/10 years but if you don't have a second copy of the files you will lose all your work.

I've had it and now am very anal aboutr backing up.....

Thanks Jim,

just Googled it, will download it later and have a play

In that case just get a couple of external hard drives (maybe 500gb each) and keep transferring/backing up. Its a bit of a pain remembering to do this but not as annoying as losing all the data!

Much better to set up an automated system imo like Time Machine or a PC equivalent.

Ive just bought a One thousand GB portable hard drive for £60 from Argos

works well and its portable too

Les

I use a Samsung Story Station for my Time Machine backups and have another which I back up to manually.

I'm interested about the advice to backup to two devices. I haven't experimented, but can Time Machine do this, and is it as simple as backing up one device, but staggering the timings?

Time Machine was/is designed to backup to only one HD.

Guys Synctoy allows you to sync folders from one drive to another with the click of a button. Can also sync a whole disk to disk. Also tracks changes to files too.

I don't think LaCie make HDs, just the enclosures - they use a few different brands of HD inside I believe. They don't have a great rep for reliability though.
