"The public are being asked to help the police investigate the suspicious disappearance of three white-tailed eagles. The cases include a chick born in the wild earlier this year in Sussex, one of the first white-tailed eagles to fledge in England for hundreds of years"

Just saw the item on the news.....

One in Hampshire, one in North Wales & one in Scotland.

So the question is killed or still alive but whichever 'situation', where are they???

I'm suprised a human has been able to handle one, they have talons that could crush a human skull. Unless they had some kind of trap or harness, drugged it or whatever, a fully grown adult WTE (or a wild eagle of any description) isn't gong to let you handle it without hurting you. The WTEs in particular are huge birds.

The chick was maybe taken with a view to rearing it but who knows? It would bring thousands on the black market.

I did a photo shoot years ago (2015), a captive, wild bird of prey morning. One bird was a Steppe Eagle and we were warned, not to go near it as even a minor confrontation with it could put a human in hospital. Its handler stayed with it at all times and that was a captive bird.

Whoever has done this will probably be marked up and if they are ever caught, they'll be looking at jail, they are heavily protected birds, Schedule 1 on steroids.

I'm not even going to try to deceive the sweary word filter but that's what I think of anyone that would harm such a stunning animal!

We were horrified by the news story lst evening. Keeping fingers crossed that it doesn't end really badly (for the birds)

Three widely separated sites in a short period of time "speaks" of significant organisation and planning, especially in regard to that all three birds were fitted with trackers that were removed and left behind.

Whatever the reason they disappeared, such an act ranks in the same order of 'bad actor Ghillies' that have in the past been responsible for poisoning raptors on grouse moors.

Yes, sadly the point I was trying to make. :(

could it not be bird flu, birds dying left right and center near me, awful to see swans just dead in the water.

The trackers were removed from the birds, why remove the trackers and take/dispose of the birds

I've seen a medium size owl shread one of those gauntlet things the handlers use, while someone was wearing it. I wouldn't fancy getting on the wrong side of a grumpy one.
