Yes
Silly question time, I have a Canon EOS 700D which currently has a 18-55mm STM lens, do I have to stick with STM or can I use USM also. I ask because I may be able to get hold of a EF 75-300mm USM lens at a good price.

Mix and match. The STM lenses are designed to be better for video is all (quieter and smooth focusing is the intention I think).

Philip, Canon 75-300 is a really "weak" lens.
Please reconsider buying it, regardless of the price. ;)

I'll echo what Luis has written......the 75-300 is not going to excite you and it's hard to imagine a "good price" unless you're down below £50.

The 55-250 (there are several different versions), whilst not quite the same build quality, has far better optics and usually trades for a similar price (sometimes cheaper).

My ten pence worth, if you want a 70-300 lens then consider the superb Tamron SP 70-300 f4-5.6 Di VC USD lens. Superb lens on a 700D and quite affordable too.

Yes, Tamron 70-300 VC or Canon 55-250 STM are the picks at the budget end.Great value both

thanks for all the advice, 300mm now off the shopping list

I can't comment on the Canon 70-300, but I do have the tamron and am pretty happy with it, for the price it's very good value. The Canon 55-250 stm is reputed to be a very good lens. The thing to remember is that not to expect L glass quality from consumer priced lens. If you can keep that in mind then these (and other) lens are good deals.
