Still life techniques wanted

Hi.
I am new to photography and still life. Below is my first attempt. Any feedback welcome.

#3 is the winner out that lot - its a shame its mostly out of focus - you seem to have locked onto the edge of the shell.

You can do 2 things with this sort of stuff - either narrow DOF, in which case choose your focus point carefully. Or alternatively, because you should be using a tripod, go for a high f number and a slow shutter speed. That way its all sharp.

I'm afraid the composition on the others isn't interesting enough.
 
Still life is hard to crack.

The best advice i could give you is to look at paintings.
The master painters are the ones who changed pictures of "stuff" in to an art form.

Study them & you will be snapping great still life in no time. :)

Composition is OK, but there are, as already mentioned depth of field issues. The last image no 4 parts of the lemon and apple are almost burnt out and the shadows very sharp. I do not know whether you used a flash or natural light in No4
 
You don't always need to get in close, sometimes a feeling of space and air can enhance an image.

Lighting is key.
