Sterling Archer's Photo 52 - Part 1 (1-26)

Hi Mark

I like your take on twisted.
For me, I'd rather the Zippo was cloned out and a camp fire was used in stead.
Someone on TP did a great Storm Trooper shot with troopers sat around a camp fire, I've had a quick look but cannot find it.

I'm sure TP is boosting the price of Lego men on eBay.
I had a quick look yesterday for some Lego men bargins but they appear to be the same price as lenses - I wonder how many TP'ers are bidding?

Hiya Mark,

I love this photo for Hidden, and no it is not just a bowl of hidden Smarties ..... it is a bowl of Mark's 'smarties' :p

A nice clear photo and good use of lighting  Personally I would have applied a tiny bit of saturation to add a slight boost to the colours, but otherwise well done.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I really like your twisted, and will go against the grain and say I like the zippo - adds scale and humour.

Hidden, great idea but for me the catchlights on the smarties (and M&M) distract. Some lovely images in your 52 though :)

Hi Mark, great shot for "hidden". Really clever idea. I like the little highlights on all the smarties. I feel the colours need a little boost - maybe a slight increase in saturation and/or lift the mid-tones.

If I'm being picky I'd say you need to have either everything in focus or else make more of the limited DOF

I love the almost abstract patterns. Great detail and centre sharpness.

Overall a very entertaining and pleasing image.

Thanks for the comments.

I added +4 to the saturation, but agree it could maybe use a little more.

Once I get my laptop back and can use CS5 instead of CS2 I'll be re-shooting Twisted and re-editing Hidden, so watch this space.

Hi mark

If anything i think the shot of the sweets is slightly under exposed... May just be my iphone screen... But id pump up the brightness a bit, the saturation as others have said but lastly id tweek the contrast a bit too... But im no pp expert!

Great photo... Nice and colourful!

I think Mark's right regarding the exposure, always difficult when you are dealing with light reflecting. Great idea for the shot.

Hiya Mark,

Glad to hear you are back in action .... and love the revised version of 'hidden'.

As for the marshmallows ..... I wonder who that was .....

Cheers

Dawn :)

Now your hidden looks sssooooooooo much better via Flickr (dark background), the centre almost looks convex....

I'm really glad you didn't add a border to this one.

Hi Mark

those smarties look sooo scrummy , great take on Hidden with the edited versioon being much more colorful

Now tell me, how come you retouched the original and didn't reshoot - are those sweeties with the marshmallows?

I think you might be right there Neil :D

D ;)

The original was good, but the re-edit is even better. Not over-saturated for me.

As Andy says the flickr version does look better - not sure why.

Week 23 - Broken

My favourite idea for Broken wasn't going to happen, so that will be another possible reshoot next time a reshoot card is drawn.

Week 24 - Bright

Taken earlier this evening on a walk on Saddleworth Moor. I'm sure the top and bottom border won't be to everyone's tastes, but for me the photo just looked a bit too bare without it.

Hi, Mark 2 nice takes on the themes, there.

#1, great low angle, well set up with nice lead in, just the right DOF. Only thing I wasn't keen on was the tiled floor, but unsure why,

#2, like this, great low perspective, clouds are just right for me and the sun is, well, bright. I actually like the border.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this one to see if any other members spot any changes they'd make.

Cheers and nice one for being so quick with week ...

Hiya Mark,

Well done, two great shots for each of the themes.

Agree with the comments Andy has made, and also I'm not sure about the tiled floor either, think it has to do with the lines, but a good shot nonetheless.

I love the 'bright' shot the low angle works well and the framing suits it perfect.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks both. I originally wanted to do Broken outside on a wet pavement (new one so it looked good) under a street light near us, but it stayed dry every day. Of course, now I've taken the photo, it's started raining!

Hi Mark,

"Broken" - great idea for broken. I like the low perspective and the tilted angle which both add to the atmosphere. Your idea for doing it outdoors on a wet pavment is good. Not sure about the DOF as I'm alittle unclear about where my attention should be

"Bright" fantastic shot! Really like the angle, composition. The feeling of peace and tranquility is lovely.

Patrick

(now, shouldn't be sitting here on the computer when I've still got "broken" to do:help:)

Well just to add to all the obstacles I've faced so far, the screen on my laptop has been playing up, and my laptop has been sent off to be fixed. :annoyed:

Luckily, I've been able to slum it on Mrs Archer's laptop (joke if you're reading this!) to get Twisted done.

Hidden will be going up after work later today.

Week 21 - Twisted

Photo 52 - Week 21 - Twisted by MVS Photography, on Flickr

That's the sweet I spent ages looking for in shops around the town! I couldn't find those anywhere! I'm sick of the sight of sweets now I've been in so many shops!

I like the idea of it being on fire, although I'm not sure about the lego character.

Broken I like the idea of, although I think it's not the tiled floor that has a problem, but the angle of the shot which makes the lines pull your eyes away from the bag, etc.

I like the shot for bright, but despite the glaringly obvious (pun intended :D) the actual image doesn't seem bright. It's more like a late afternoon shade for me, but as I say I like the image itself :)

I know I shoul not have to ask... and its obviously just me as no one else seems to not get it... But go and explain the bloken themed pic to me and why it fits the theme... I Love the pic btw!

I Like the low angle of bright and love how you have no flare in the shot...

Twisted is such fun... well done... I wish I had some lego men as they seem usefull for this 52!

As Bluesmachine said, the strap on the bag is broken and the bag's contents have fallen out.

@Bluesmachine - My idea for Twisted was that the lego man was roasting his marshmallow on the Zippo. Kind of a 'little person uses large objects' type thing.

I like broken, but it looks staged, which I know it is, but a more natural environment for a fancy bag would be better. It's the floor; a pavement would have been better, or even better would have been a dance floor! It's l nice idea though and I like the DOF.

Bright is a nice shot.
I'm not sure about these things, but I can imagine it would be difficult to keep the sun from over exposing and retaining the detail. Did you use any filters?

I know what you mean. Although it was staged, the contents (except for the phone for obvious reasons were dropped to try and at least attempt to make it look like the bag had broken while it was being carried. The more I look at this pic the more I want to reshoot it. Still, it's been chucking it down all day today, so when it's darker I may nip out to do the reshoot.

I have a UV filter on the lens, but just set the Aperture to f9 and the shutter speed to 1/2000. I took some with slightly slower shutter speeds, but they ended up too bright and looked over exposed.

Hi Mark

I like your shot for Broken ...the tiles & style of bag give me the feeling it was taken in a very upmarket ladies powder room

Bright...beautiful capture , love the thick borders , great angle & spot on theme. Simple but very effective
