Yes
Right, folks. I'm in need of a step up ring or rings and can't decide whether to buy a more expensive one or just a cheap set from Amazon which can be had for a fiver.

Thoughts?

My last one was from eBay and cost me £3.70. It does what it needs to and is fine for me. I think if you spend more you'll get one that's got a bit of a better finish and might not bind as easily, but you have to remember that it's just a step up ring so doesn't need to be expensive!

My thoughts exactly, Carl. I just have a nagging feeling I'd regret buying cheap.

Maybe, but all you'll lose out on is the price of a pint ;) I do think my one feels quite cheap and I think it might get stuck on filters a bit easier, but I don't know if I'd spend more than 6-7 quid on one, even if it was branded

You can always hack saw it off if it gets stuck.

I try and balance a best of both. A cheap set that covers all bases so I'm not short of a combination of x to y if I need it, and once I know I have a specific need for a step-up that I'll be using a lot I get that one ring to replace stacking the cheap ones.

Exactly the scenario I'd prefer to avoid! [emoji23]

That's the thing, I know the specific size I need so may as well get a single ring in the right size.

That being the case, which brands are best?

Whichever Amazon has in UK stock. I really haven't ever considered the brand - although if pushed to pick a specific one I'd probably look for Neewer or one of the other low price brands with a decent reputation.

It's a metal ring with two different sized internal threads, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the brand :0)

It's more so whether the brand has any bearing on the quality of said metal ring ;)

I've had a selection of step up filters in the past and haven't noticed any differences between them. I'm not one for spending more just to buy a brand if there's no other benefit. Maybe like you said, if you only need one specific size, just pick up that one.

A mere careful touch of vaseline on the thread helps stop filters binding; that and avoiding cross threading it in the first place. I've got Kood ones and have never had a problem with them

I agree, smear Vaseline on yer ring

You, sir, have a dirty mind. :D

In all seriousness though, I've used a few cheap rings ( oh here we go again) and never had an issue ,(unlike Mr Vaz).

But using Vaseline is a good tip, lipsil, red rubber grease should all be fine. Don't use mineral oils etc as these contain hydrocarbons that could damage paint, plastics or even coating's

Beware leaving them in the sun:

See that step up ring under the 55mm filter on the right? It used to be black, till I stored it on my window sill for 2 years...
