Step ladder etiquette at public events?

Yes
I've just got back from Treaddur Bay lifeboat station where Prince William and Kate were officially naming a Lifeboat. There were lots of press photographers there as you can imagine, in the designated press area, beside which was a packed public viewing area.

Now, people had waited for a good couple of hours for the Royal Party and when they finally arrived the crowd were understandably very excited. The excitement almost turned into violence however, when a row 6 or 7 people (a camera club perhaps?) near the front of the public area all climbed up onto previously unseen stepladders, blocking the entire view for everyone behind.

Judging by the abuse they received (from normally very mild mannered people it has to be said, Treaddur Bay is a nice area) I'd be surprised if they left with their gear in tact - if it had been Caernarfon they would've definitely been thrown in the sea with their toys!

Anyway, what's the general view on ladder etiquette in public areas? This kind of thing can't be right, can it?

In the Press area it's vital - in the public area it's bloody anti-social, especially if you are at the front. If there are no designated areas, then it's a free for all I'm afraid.

I'm glad I'm not alone in my thinking.

There was a press/media area but these clowns, despite having 1 series Canons and L lenses, were in the front of the public area, eagerly shooting away like pap's, lined-up on their stepladders fully aware of the grief they were causing the people behind.

I even saw one 60+ year old lady pull one of them off his ladder by his coat, to loud cheers from the crowd, fair play to her. :D

Do you have any pics? the old lady one would be a corker

If it'd been Caernarfon they'd only have been worried about line of sight for throwing stuff not, watching what was going on!

Haha. I did take some pics but they were too near for the lens I was using. Now I think about it, I should have made an effort to shoot them instead of Will & Kate. It would've been more intersting and probably yielded better results too!

they'd tried that around the press pen and the RNLI boat wouldn't have been the only thing being launched into the sea... :D

sounds like they were douchebags, basically.... whole point of a step ladder is for if you need to be able to see over the back of people... not needed when you're in front! bet their pictures were crap too...

Then they deserve everything they get? :p

(I do agree with your general point though - not really a photography issue, just a basic manners issue)
