Hi,

As a fairly newbie into the DSLR world, I am wondering if anybody has any experience of using a step down ring for filters?

I have a Canon 450D camera with two lenses. I am going to purchase a polarising filter for my 58mm lens but I really can't afford to buy one for my 62mm lens at the moment because I'm saving for my wedding. I'm planning to take both lenses on my honeymoon though.

I've seen step down rings for 62mm to 58mm for between £5 and £8. Just want to know what people think of them.

Many thanks,

L

you need a 62mm CPL and a step down ring to allow you to fit 58mm lens . or you could get one of these for a cokin type holder

My understanding of it was that it was the other way...here's the one I've seen on WHE...

"Kood 62-58 Step down ring
£7.99
A step down ring to allow the use of 58mm filters on a lens with a 62mm filter thread."

HELP!!!!

if you stick a 58mm filter on a 62mm lens the filter casing will appear in all you shots as the filter is smaller that the lens. you will need a 62-58mm step down ring and a 62mm filter.

Hey i have got a step down ring like this.
I use my 62mm CPol on my 70-300 (62mm thread) and then use the step down ring to use the CPol with my kit lens (58mm thread). I havent found any problems with it at all! If i was in your situation it is a no brainer to just buy the bigger filter and a step down ring! :)
Matt

If you use a stepping ring to mount a filter smaller than the correct size for a lens you are risking vignetting at max aperture at least.

If the filter size is larger than the lens, then its a step up ring. If the filter size is smaller than the lens, then its a step down ring.
As already said, using a 58mm filter on a 62mm diameter lens will result in severe vignetting. Get the 62mm filter and a step up ring from 58mm to 62mm. That will work fine.

Thanks guys,

So I've been getting confused between a step up and a step down ring. So If I get a 62mm filter and a step up ring then it will also fit my 58mm lens....great!!

Has anybody had any problems with doing that or forsee any problems with it?

No, that way works fine, I've used 67mm filters on a 58mm thread lens using a step up ring...

I've been using cheapy chinese ones from ebay for a while, no problems other than sometimes they can be a bit stubborn when it comes to taking them off again but so far they've always come off eventually. You can get sets of them fairly cheaply to cater for future lens/filter purchases.
