Last week my sister's ashes were finally interred in Midhurst Cemetery in a grave with my Dad's ashes, my Grandparents and an Auntie who died young.
My daughter wanted to go over and say her goodbyes, and whilst there we had a wander round the town I grew up in.
Showed her the house my Grandparents lived in and where my Dad and 2 sisters were born, which was sold by the Cowdray Estate when my grandfather died
The new owners named it after our family

A couple of Phone pics

Not surprisingly it is now a listed building, although seems they have built new house all round on my old school grounds

I was surprised to read my Grandfathers possible employment, I do remember he always kept his appearance neat so could be true.
I do know his parent lived in tied Cowdray property at nearby Benbow Pond and one of my Uncles was Head Greenkeeper at Cowdray Golfclub

Anyone know how I could ckeck this info without getting involved in the likes of those ancestry website.

Be great to hear if anyone else has found things out about their past too

Old families often kept good records so it might be worth asking them. IIRC, old census records list employment.

What was his first name and any idea about when he was born?

First name George, and I would say late 1800s or early 1900s
He had a brother named Charles who enlisted in 1915 at the age of 19 and died in WW1
His father;s name was James and Believe his Mother was Kate or similar

Can't access census as it's too early and all family members that may know are deceased

Sorry, I meant the employer's family rather than yours. They might even have photos of your Grandfather in the car in an old album - cars were rather less common back then and often well documented! ;)
