I know it has been oop for a while but if you own one maybe you can answer this:

Does the 500aw take a laptop or is it just the 550 and 650 models that have been designed that way?

No - 500 AW Isn't designed to take a laptop but you could potentially get one in there maybe - go see http://www.cambags.com/ - a guy on there has one in, arguably it isn't the best protected though.

I think tbh i would go for the aw550 over the aw500 it just seems a little bit better padded.
