Steal £18k. Avoid Jail

No I am not. They are meant to pay their tax liability, no more, no less and they check the laws at their own expense to work out what they have to pay. The law is the law and they didn't break it. It's a simple fact.

which is why its tax avoidance not tax evasion ... however its still not paying your fair share.

Personally I'd close all the loopholes and make everyone pay what they are billed - however i'm not an elected official hoping to get a second salary as a consultant/lobbyist after my termof office is up.

edit

Seems the EU don't agree that amazons practices are on the up and up ... they are to face an EU commision investigation of their corp[orate tax practices http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29519631

and ref starbucks :
The Public Accounts Committee of MPs said last year it "found it difficult to believe" Starbucks "was trading with apparent losses for nearly every year of its operation in the UK". - paying high interest to borrow money from yourself in order to reduce your tax liability, doesnt sound entirely legit to me either

They have paid what they were billed.
What peeves some is that they weren't billed more :-)

What appears to be being investigated is whether they were honest on the returns leading to the bill

Hypothetically If I have a company making say £10k proffit on day to day business , but to avoid paying tax on that I have a subsidary company which lends company 1 say £100k at 10% apr , and then company 1 pays company 2 the 10k as interest and thus reports a zero profit for taxation then thats essenitially legal... but only so long as company 2s lending capital is completely seperate from company 1

If company 1 is actually funding the lending capital of company 2 then borrowing it back then thats contrived purely so as to not report a profit ,and thats not legal

In very over simplified terms thats the sort of shenanigans that they are/were being investigated for

Best await the outcome of any investigations then I guess.
Save a whole lot of conjecture all round :-)
