State Pension?

When comparing EV and ICE car cost, you need to look at like for like so Tesla or BMW,
MG4 or Ford Puma and they are very close.

One thing to be aware of is the huge rise in price of cars over the last few years. If you bought a new car in 2019 you're in for a shock at the cost of the same thing in 2024

A new Yaris now starts at over £25k and before they stopped building them a Ford focus started at over £28k

We have a Virgin money account, since they don’t do foreign exchange I get to use my debit card in cash machines abroad and get almost the bank rate, certainly more than any rate offered for cash at the usual suspects.
 
I drive a Honda ice vehicle, 2l-240bhp 2 seat convertible, it’ll reach 140 top down, it comes in at just over 1.2tonnes and cost me just over £20k new, in 2009, when there is an ev replacement I’ll consider it, until then e5 super unleaded it is, downside is £730 ved.

Because smartphones and the like have been with us for 15 odd years now. Using email, streaming etc... I am sure it was an argument when people started to move to cars from horses.

But, I was also trying to respond that you dont need to be tech savvy to use a car. Steering wheels work in the same way as any other car!

Most cars have apply or android connection and its similar to that. Maps, music works in same way. Seat adjustment is like in any other car. There is not much to setup. Job done! Ok, other chargers need their own account and are not as quick as Tesla but it is still pretty easy to do. If you can operate Apple Music or Netflix, running an EV is no harder

It doesn't matter if you buy it or not. That is the conversations I have had. Fully except other people's experience may be different. It may come as a shock to you but there are a lot of people that don't own an Apple product (me for one) nor do they have Netflix etc. Just off the top of my head a couple of them just have normal TV's not sure if they all have any form of smart phone either. Some of them certainly struggle paying at some car park meters that want you to pay online. Not everyone has embraced the digital world. My MIL doesn't have a mobile phone. Won't even switch on a computer. Has countless arguments in banks because they want her to go online. Switches when the local branches close, but that has to be done face to face.

I have tried to explain to you. It is not purely the mechanics of driving an EV it is for them their perception of what driving/owning an EV is like.

Remember my older relatives came from an era when they did their own repairs.

I imagine that in the not too distant future the state pension will be means tested!
For example if you have savings, for each £1000.00 you have managed to save you would lose say £20.00 per month?
I have a feeling that the state pension in Australia works in a similar fashion?

I think controls should be physical as they can often be operated pretty much by muscle memory rather than them being screen based and occasionally needing different screens to be accessed and navigated. Screens within the drivers field of vision should IMO be legislated away. That these tablet like Android/Windows like controls are allowed phases me. It'd be interesting to know if driver distraction accidents increase with these cars.

Universal basic income used to be a favourite amongst the left so it's interesting and concerning to see them now attacking benefits but I suppose they think the elderly don't vote Labour and even if they do they should just hurry up and die so their houses becomes available.
 
Budget coming up, I wonder what Reeves will do to pensions!

If they come up with something like that my savings will disappear under the mattress, or somewhere similar, let’s see them trace them then, although wifey has already decided that having savings is overrated and spending them.

I actually sometimes wonder if it not just the press that need a label. Left/Right etc. Labour easing planning controls would certainly not be seen as "left wing".

Not sure what controls are actually needed these days (physically). Indicators (and scroll wheels for music) aside I dont have any other on the Tesla. You can use voice commands easily to turn things on and off or increase temps, lights are on auto including adaptive high beam. if anything, as there is less clutter visible I think it easier to focus on the road rather than certain dials.
 
Apparently a friends Tesla doesn’t understand his Fife accent.

To be fair the UK tax free allowance is pretty generous in Greece where I have a house but am not resident there is zero allowance but there is a flat rate of tax which is about 8%
its quite a juggling act and every person in Greece has an accountant to sort there affairs out, also Spain where I might be buying a house and becoming resident there tax free allowance is zero as well tax starts at 9% and goes up pro -rata................

UK pensioners have it pretty easy
