Edit My Images

HI guys -I searched on here and have found the great tutorials on Adobe TV  - so once I get an answer to this question, I will be all set. I also have Scott Kelby's Mighty tome on LR4 but realise that I need to see it happening on screen to get me going - I am sure it will be a great reference once I have the big picture.. anyway here is my question as I have not put LIghtroom on either of my Macs yet [one is a laptop]...

When I load up the system disk, will it try to bring all my iPhoto library across? I don't want that to happen!

I also have Aperture on there - do you think there is a case for keeping it on? I bought this software at Focus and have decided it it time to just get on with it but I know getting it right at the beginning is really important. I am still having a spring clean of my images - upto 2011 so far.

Thanks for helping.

Hi, Lightroom will do nothing unless you tell it to do so, it will as you have probably seen give you the option of what photographs you want to import and what not.
I am still learning(you never stop) but what I do is drag and drop my images into a folder on my second drive then when I am ready I just choose IMPORT and then ADD
I find this to actually be a faster way and also I no where my images are without L/R having to tell me.

Go to the Adobe web site. They have a lot of tutorial video's which you'll probably find useful including those on the import side of things.

Id also suggests you start with a dummy catalogue that you can dump. Just work on a few sets of images and get it right before you start with a vengeance. A little time now can save loads in the future

I also stepped into Lightroom with trepidation. I can't remember exactly what I did, but I have a Mac and I'm pretty sure it gave me the option to import all of my pictures… I decided not to import any when I first set it up.

You can only edit photos if you have imported them. When you import them (which I am still doing selectively after transferring them from card to computer), you can choose whether to 'add' them to the catalogue but leave them in the same place, or move or copy them to a new place… I currently add them to the catalogue but leave them where they are. I am slowly getting used to the idea of using Lightroom for everything.

Thanks everybody.... will keep going on my spring cleaning - up to 2011 now. Will get the last bit done and then take the plunge in to Lightroom.

To answer your other question re Aperture. I have this on my Mac and have no use for it. LR does 98% and on the rare occasion, PS6 or PSE get an outing (layers work mainly)

Thanks Buck... when I know what I am doing with Lightroom, I will sort that.
