I'm really interested in starting a blog so I can gain some fans and promote my work however i have no idea where to start. The main problem is I have no idea how to get people to read it or even just to see it so would just like some advice on starting a blog and getting readers

Many thanks

I too have been wondering this same thing (hence me rating you 5 stars XD)

What would the main purpose of your blog be?
Photography? Or your life in general?
Good idea to post links everywhere, forum signatures, email signatures, facebook page, instant messenger name, website link on forums..sure you get the idea.
However, a person following one of those links will only visit once unless there is something there to draw them back.
So make your blog as interesting as possible. Don't ramble on to much about things, or have harsh colours/fonts as people will switch off.

Purchasing a domain name helps aswell.. I would remember www.holderbeam.com much easier than www.myblog.com/holder_beam4720

Hope this helps you, even slightly :)

Its only annoying if you make it annoying.
A simple link in your sig (much like mine... clicky clicky ;) ) isnt annoying.
Also, link the large versions of your pictures you post on blogs to your blog, that way if someone clicks on it, they will be directed there, and with any luck they will have a browse.

Like I say, main way is to get something solid and interesting, and it will eventually pick up like a cow wrapped in sellotape rolling down a hill.

haha thanks

also about the domain is there a site where i can design my own page very simply and add content without having to work out the mechanics of dreamweaver etc

cheers

You can get templates, though most of these look terrible. Unless you are prepared to spend a little on one.
These have all the coding and design done for you, all you have to do is customise your styling slightly, and upload your pics to their server IIRC.
Maybe worth looking into?
