Star trails exposure

Thinking of doing star trails but if i do bulb mode for 20 minutes but i'm worried that my images will be over exposed, how can i maintain an extremely slow shutter speed without bright images?
By the way, i have a canon 60D

I find stacking to be a good method. Helped me recently when i set my camera to take 30s exposures continually for an hour or so. When i went back to my camera, the front lens element was covered in dew. With a single exposure, the shot would have been ruined, but i was still able to use half my 30s exposures to salvage things.

Starstax was the free software i used, and dead simple to use. And the guide linked to above was brilliant.
 
Unless you live somewhere with extremely dark slies, an exposure of more than a couple of minutes is likely to lead to a bright sky due to light pollution. The way to go is several shorter exposures stacked together in PP. Software to stack star trails can be downloaded for free.
 
Thanks guys, going to do the stacked approach so my sensor doesn't overheat and get damaged

Really it's all be said, go down the stacked route it's easier, you can do a single exposure and a good friend of mine from over in the state captures some stunning single exposure star trail but in the UK the light pollution really isn't conducive to the single exposure route
