hi all, just after abit of advice on tripods, iv just ordered a sky watcher sky adventurer, and am going to need a tripod to mount this on with also my canon 70d and lens.

I havnt got a clue when it come to tripods but don't really want to spend over £100.

What can you recommend?

Been a while since I bought a tripod but looking at the kit you are getting.

It needs to be able to hold a minimum of 2.5kg
The more rigid the better as long exposures need something that will not move!
NB hanging a heavy weight off of the bottom of the tripod will aid stability but factor that weight into the tripod capacity.
Whatever to get do not be tempted to extend this centre column, keep it closed ~ this again is to ensure stability.

Best of luck and I look forward to your user update:)

As for makes this look at:-
Manfrotto
Giotto
Benro

Thanks for the info, for stability what would you recommend, aluminium or carbon?

If you want to keep within your price range it will need to be Aluminium.

I have never owned one, but many people on here speak well of a brand called Redsnapper. I think TP members get a 10% discount, but would make sure that is still applicable

As mentioned by Rich at your budget Carbon is unlikely.

Aluminium is also heavier than carbon and unless you are carrying your kit a lot the weight I hope would not be too onerous.

In regard to design the fewer leg elements the better, mine has three sections ~ again stability is better the fewer leg sections. Also, look at the locking clamps on the legs ~ do they lock firmly and ensure rigidity of the leg when extended. As you perhaps do not need great height off the ground you could even use the tripod with legs unextended?

I was looking at the manfrotto Carbon one in the for sale section, maybe better to get a second hand one and get more for my money?

You can double or even triple the weight capacity you'e been quoted as needing, the weight of the star adventurer/counterweight and wedge + camera/lens will be close to or exceed 5kg.
