Yes
My dad has purchased himself a 600D. He hasn't used a digital SLR before but used to use film SLRs in the past, so is not totally new to it all. What he would like is one or two lenses for general use (eg. holidays, family stuff). He's not looking to spend a fortune, probably in the low hundreds.

What options are out there that will give a significant improvement over the standard kit lens (18-55 IS?).

Thanks

If he wants a zoom, the 55-250mm IS is a cracking lens for the money.
I have yet to hear a bad report about it. I have one myself and love it, although I have a 70-200mm L, it doesn't get used as much as it should, I am loath to get rid because I know I will miss it!

To replace the kit lens, have a look at the Canon 17-55 or the Tamron equivalent.

+1 for the 55-250.

By family stuff I assume you mean family portraits etc... Have a look at the canon 50mm f/1.8
You will then have the classic set of starter lenses which are very good.

55-250 is too long.

17-55 is £750.
17-85 is more likely at £250.
50 is probably a yes.

There are 3 recommended lenses up from the kit (in increasing price)

  • Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC
  • Canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS (that's 15-85 NOT 17-85)
  • Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS

IMHO, the best compromise is the 15-85.

17-85 is more likely at £250.

If you check the decent review sites (like photozone.de), the 18-55IS is an IQ upgrade to the 17-85.

The only real IQ upgrades are the Canon 17-55 (probably too big, too heavy and too expensive for someone just starting out in DSLRs) or something like the Tamron 17-50.

In truth, until he really finds his way the IS kit lens will probably be more than enough, and he should look at additional lenses like a 50, or telephoto like the 55-250 or even a UWA.

I agree with Dave the kit lens should be ok for now but if your realy looking for a decent yet affordable upgrade condsider getting Canon EF-S 15-85mm its compact has a fairly wide angle and reasonable telephoto reach and gives nice sharp photos. But if its a decent portrait lens maybe a sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or the Tammy as an alternative.

A Canon 17-85mm or 18-135 are realy no better than a kit lens.

I find it quite fun using a 50mm as my walk about lens. It's quite challenging sometimes finding the best position without the use of a zoom but I'm sure it helps you learn
