When you send pictures off to the paper, what is a general guide for standard rate for 1 picture to a regional?

Im speaking to a paper, and they have been onto my website and seen that i offer the digital files for £8 on there.

Is this about right or....?

I have just send a polite message back at the moment saying that the price on the website is not for media use and that i accept their standard rate for the picture to be published in their media.

Is this wrong/cheeky or am i right to ask for their standard rate? Its really not about the money, just about getting a fair deal for whatever they want.

We need more info, are there any restrictions with the usage of the digital files that you sell for £8 on your website?
You can hardly blame anyone for questioning why you are asking them a premium compared to the advertised price on your website can you?

I disagree. Look at a huge number of Photoshelter accounts and you will see different pricing for both personal digital downloads and those for editorial/commercial use.

If a paper reckons that they can only pay £8 for a shot then they're taking the p***, and more to the point, they know it.

Asking for standard rate is fine- just make sure that it's a decent one.

You disagree with what?

to be honest i havnt got any restrictions advertised on the website. i guess i should clarify it on there.
i agree with you i cant blame them for asking but as other poster said i do have a feeling that they may be taking the ****.
obvs im still pretty new to this so the only way u learn is throigh experience/mistakes.
im just asking others opinions om the matter.

£8 is on the low side for an image to the press and they will know this but if you have them on your site with no restrictions then there is not much you can do. Best change the usage terms on your site.

You'll not be the first to be caught out with this

If they had been self billing you'd have been ok.

Try doing a search for press/media rates and some T&C for these. This will give you some idea but dont expect to much for regional papers but more than the £8 your quoting.

No need for the search, I know what they pay me. :)

Tom, what and who do you mean by a regional, i would take that to mean the Yorkshire Post or something as big.

Youre seriously going to find it difficult to get people what they get paid from any publication, it's a touchy subject with lots of sports togs for various and understandable reasons, however unless someone tells you then you have no idea what to charge yourself and are at the mercy of the papers sports editor and a lot of them will tell you a pack of lies about having no budget for sports or that they only pay £10 per image even to the established pro.

If you accept the £10 per image you will probably get flak for underselling yourself and the industry in general and there will be some truth in that if another photographer is getting say £30 per image from a local rag or £75 for a commissioned match and you come along savagely undercutting him.

If you genuinley think 3 hours of your time and the travel costs you incur on a wet windy Saturday afternoon is only worth £10 then theres no hope for us, but youre obviously not an idiot and its not that difficult to work out a reasonable fee to charge.

Everyones "fee" will be different based on several factors including how much each individual values his time and work, how much up front expenditure each individual has spent just to get to the game and im not just talking petrol money, you also need to consider the cost of the equipment youre using and to be at least to recuop that cost over its lifetime and make profit on top, then you need to factor in how gullable a sports editor thinks you are and how cheap he can rope you in for and also your relativly limited experience.

It was the Hull Daily Mail gary, they contacted the club who put them through to me. They requested a few pics of sean quinn to use in a match preview. I sent a few across stating no free usage, they then found my website and e-mailed saying that is it correct to assume the price is £8, i clarified that that is not for media usage and that i accept standard rates.
They never got back to me.
I assume they wanted something for nothing! well they can swivvel!
In the end i can find no match preview on their website, wether they ran a printed story i'll never know.
But they never got the image for £8.
As ive said before, its not about the money at this point so id rather have nothing than take £8 for a picture to a paper.

Good man standing your ground! £8 was a ridiculous price to be offered. Plus you never know, they may have shortlisted you for future work, then if they see something they like then they might actually pay you a decent fee.

I'd just take the fact that a newspaper wanting one of my photos as a compliment and keep up the high standards (Which I will never have)
