Hi all,

This question must have been asked/answered already but tried searching "Aspect Ratio" etc and could find anything - so apologies in advance!

I'd like to keep the 3:2 ratio of my images but how do I calculate the best standard frame sizes for my work?

I'd like to learn the maths for myself, but a list of frame sizes that have worked for you will be fine too!

Thanks in advance

Graydon

PS - I'm up-to-speed with the necessary methods of cropping/resizing etc on Photoshop

The maths is easy enough. The long dimensions simply needs to be 1.5X longer than the short dimension. I don't know which combinations wold be regarded as "standard" sizes, but here are examples that maintain the ratio....

6x4
9x6
12x8
15x10
18x12
21x14
24x16
27x18
30x20

The maths is pre-GCSE stuff!

So that would be your 2x & 3x tables then

Surely that's GCSE grade C and above these days isn't it

6x4
9x6
12x8
15x10
18x12
21x14
24x16
27x18
30x20

The ones in bold are the most common frame sized ones - the others are full frame as shot but are hard to find an actual frame that they can go into without cropping, or without having a bespoke one (costly) made

A4 is close to full image and there are plenty of frames available for that size too - mostly as certificates come in A4

Another option I have employed before now is just use mounts in a larger frame. A custom mount is cheaper than a custom frame.
Found some reasonably good frames which were 14" x 11" so I used mounts that gave me a 12" x 8" opening. Even having the mount 50% thicker on one axis doesn't look as bad as I imagined it would. Nobody seems to even notice it :whistling:

FYI standard frame sizes up to 20" x 16" are:

5 x 3.5
6 x 4
6 x 5
7 x 5
8 x 6
9 x 7
10 x 8
A4
12 x 8 (not everywhere)
12 x 10
14 x 11
16 x 12
A3
18 x 14
20 x 16
