Standard of posts

Sometimes I reply to posts with in depth critique
Sometimes I reply to posts with smaller comments good or bad
Sometimes I reply with answer to questions
Sometimes I ask questions about posts
and
Sometimes I reply to post with "nice pics"

control freaks who want me to stop saying nice pics can go shove there heads where the squirrels store there nuts

To the rest I say..... Have a nice day ;)

I don't think anyone wants to stop you (or anyone who posts like you) from saying 'nice pics' every now and then - the issue is people who rarely say anything else (except wow, and great shots)

The issue for me is the people who don't come back and say thankyou even to those short comments:mad:
l never comment on a picture if the person has done that to me before

but equally sometimes there's nothing to say thankyou for - I'll generally thank someone who's made a useful contribution (unless of course i'm also talking to them by pm in which case i might thank them there) but imo saying thankyou to every post on the thread is just more pointless posting Nice shot , thanks for the comment, wow, thanks for the comment, - nah sorry why would anyone want to acknowledge a post that adds nothing to the debate

Most times if I actually post something up for crit, I WILL actually make sure that I reply to everyone who took the time to give me some feedback - that's what the multi-quite is for - you can always sweep up the odd "nice shot" comments alongside something from a more detailed level of crit. - it seems to be the decent thing to do somehow

exactly this , all in one post and a simple thanks for the short posts (y)

And there speaks someone who has lost his classified privileges ;)

I wasn't aware that I had lost my classified privleges because I haven't needed any gear for some time now and have sold very little in the past. It won't affect me now anyway as I've got what I want. I found it very useful when I was setting up because of the feedback system and the fact that most members are jealous of their good name so you could generally buy with confidence.

Not everyone wants to express their opinions in a forum, some just want to learn from those who do and have the expertise. Why deprive them of the chance to buy and sell in a trusted environment? I don't think it will improve the forum if people feel they have to concoct posts (one liners or otherwise) just to buy or sell the odd bit of gear. Ideally of course everyone would regularly contribute valuable opinions and expertise to the forum but we're in the real world and it just doesn't happen. If people want to contribute they will and if they don't they won't. Those that mainly want to buy and sell will do what they need to or look elsewhere.

A moan about the classified changes wasn't the reason I posted however. I genuinely believe that there has been a huge increase in one liner replies and whilst I take the point about mobile apps I do think the (rule) change has a bearing on it. Whatever the reason, I think there has been a decline in quality or perhaps it's more truthful to say that the quality is still there but it is becoming swamped by the dross. Just my opinion.:coat:

the automation of the existing rules (no rule change) has been in place for less than a week... there's bound to be a shakedown period where a few boneheads decide to spam the place to death in an attempt to regain their access... which then gets stamped on by the staff... without some form of "minority report" kind of prescience, we can't actually do much more about it.

But frankly, the decline has been setting in for a couple of years, not a couple of days. I remember posting my first image on here (it was truly awful) and got at least half a dozen different takes on what I could have done differently, or how I could improve it on a re-shoot. Every single one of these posts were a minimum of a 5 sentence paragraph - some of them were nearer to a page of the screen, complete with re-edits of the shot, or re-crops. And, my experience was nothing remarkable - pretty much everything got the same reception. Now, it still happens, people still DO give quality feedback at times, but sadly a large proportion of the "regulars" from back then have become disillusioned because people fail to either take on board the constructive critique, or fail to acknowlege it's happened, or simply spit their dummy out in a "well my 2033224 fwends on faecesbook all think it wrockzz so scwew you...." kind of style.

Every so often we get a "how can we improve the standard of critique" thread. They inevitably get a couple of people to sign up to give a few full-on crit's per day, and seeming inevitably, they also fizzle out under the weight of the facebook generations need for a quick +1 at the expense of everything else.

Yea, i agree, thats an awesome shot OP, maybe a little more PS would help? lol

Nice Post

(sorry, had to be done)

No, it's not! It has a dirty great shake running up from the lower sign. Nice post is an envelope with a hefty tax refund (or similar) in it!

The ones which annoy me are the people who, for their first post, pose a question such as:

"what are the best methods for a wedding photographer to market his or her services?"
and:
"I'm in the process of setting up my wedding business and I have no idea what to charge - what is the going rate?"
and
"somebody has just stolen one of my pictures, what should I do? But I wouldn't think of expecting money for it 'cos this is my hobby and I'm not a stinking capitalist like you pros"

Then invariably those people will never return to either thank respondents for their contributions to post in any other way anywhere else on the forum. They are the ones who get my goat. These questions often get posted in the Business Forum and there will often be a number of answers from people who are not in business at all, let alone the business of photography. I wonder if there could be some basic notes attached to the business section, like there are in the classified. The rules wouldn't be necessarily binding, but would be guidelines and if a poster persistently ignores them than the mods could give a gentle reminder.

I agree that people who just say 'nice pic' aren't contributing anything particularly constructive, however they are in effect giving their opinion to somebody who has asked for it. That said, if that is all they have been doing since their first post then it would appear that they are perhaps trying to get their post count up.

Mobile apps have done quite a lot to destroy the general quality of communication these days - I have no reservations in saying that in some ways I AM A LUDDITE.

Interesting thread unfortunately I do agree that the standard of comments has gone down but it's not just here its the same on other forums
The macro section on here is alive and kicking tho with a lot of people posting pictures and commenting with excellent advice and feedback being given

l never comment on a picture if the person has done that to me before
The BIG...BIGGER...BIGGEST issue for me, and it appiles to all forums are those who critique YET NEVER POST a picture of their own!!!!
got that off my chest
..and those who keep saying thanks, just to bump their post
So there we go, no names mentioned...
but you know who you are....Im watching

Your'll be surprised ( or maybe not) at the amount of "contact" that we get over time, from well established members,
that can't seem to post an image, and need guidance how to ;)
But I do understand where you are coming from

Surely thats all in the game ? ;) in an active forum, if their post slides down the page with very little comment, then thats the best way ;)
I'm not saying its right (or wrong for that matter ) though ;)

OK...here goes..
Bump

Well I I have to bump my post count somehow. Not that I'll ever use the classifieds. Not being local. But I do like to bring the average quality down.

What is it they say in the investment adverts?
Your "stock" can go up as well as down :p

Why? I've never understood this point of view; the only explanation I can honestly think of is that people who hold it feel that they would rather defer to authority than actually weigh arguments and reason it out for themselves.

Yes I agree with you there Chris if someone has taken the time to comment the least I can do is thank them

this may be true, but thats what the multiquote is for - people who post about 25 posts saying thanks individually are just post bumping

thanks... for this thread...:P

sorry, please dont hurt me :exit:

I fall into that category for "nice shot" and short feedback when I do leave it, but on the other side of the coin I do what I joined the landscape section for and that is to share images and not words, picture paints a thousand words etc, Also I've been picked up before by a complete arse of a member for spelling/grammar mistakes, hope I get to say hello to his face someday, maybe at a TP meeting.

Kevin, you're contribution to the forum is not in question - and on the subject of the grammar nazi's - drop the staff a RTM if it happens again, and we'll deal with it appropriately :bat:

That should be "your" not "you're".

...sorry.

It sounds like some don't know the unwritten code. If you think a picture is sh!t but don't want to say so, you simply write "Nice shot". And everyone knows what you mean.

What's the point in touting your wares, if you can scarcely string a thought together?

Forum = discussion.
