I've stand developed a couple of rolls of 35mm C-41 film in the last few weeks. I did these in 495ml of water + 5ml of Rodinal, I understand that the extra fluid is required for stand to allow the exhausted dev to be moved away from the film. Usually i'd only need about 300ml of fluid for 35ml,

What are peoples thoughts on 120, should 500ml be enough? I think the tank needs at least 465ml with more conventional timings so its plenty to cover the spiral. I can't really get any more fluid in as its only a double tank.
 
500ml should be ok, i tend to use 600ml to make sure there is sufficient Rodinal to dev evenly and completely
 
Do you use 6ml of rodinol for that?

No i'm not that tight to grudge a ml of developer I'm just curious :D
 
Depends entirely on what tank system? Paterson Universal System 4 tanks recommend 500ml even for standard times.

Yeah i use 6ml of Rodinal, would rather have a bit more dev than a bit less any day :)

I'm not sure what the tank is, I think its a paterson (it has a blue lid...), but its got the fluid volumes on the bottom and its about 300 for 35mm and 500 for 120.

Then 500 it is - I wouldn't use any less than the recommended amount, it's just a false economy. Developer is significantly cheaper than a botched roll of film, after all.
 
No, wasn't going to use any less just wanted to check that 5ml of dev would be ok with 500ml of water for 120 film. Might see if safely get 600ml in the tank.
 
Ok, after reading this and the link provided... I'm off to stand develop my fp4. See ya'll in an hour or so.
 
Well... I used the amount specified on my tank, and somehow its still got tide marks like it hasn't reached the upper edge of the film.
Heyho, maybe next time.

ETA: That said, thats easily remedied next time... on the plus side, without scanning/printing them, the parts that were properly developed do look rather nice.

I wonder if the dev settles in the working fluid so a little more "just to the top" is needed to make sure the top of the frame gets properly covered.


Faux edit: Just checked my tank it recommends 595 not 495 for 120 so I'd probably want at least 600ml.

Yes, but more obvious. My tank says 590ml for 120, and I used 600. Since found out the tank can hold 900ml.
 
For the sake of an extra ml or two then to make a slightly larger volume of solution is a safeguard to ensure the film is covered regardless of a weak mix for stand deving or a traditional soup.
 
Just hung mine up did about 650ml with about 6.5ml of rodinal. They look like they've developed evenly there is some lightness around the top but since the frame doesn't always sit square behind the lens its difficult to blame the processing or the 80 year old camera it was shot in.
 
Well they came out ok. Definitely the most economical way to run film, GP3 and a few ml of Rodinal. Its not as grainy as I expected but GP3 still curls like hell.
