Hi all

We are getting some new fencing put in and will be using concrete posts & gravel boards.

However the contractor mentioned we could paint or stain the concrete to more compliment the wood panels & trellis we chose.

Doing some reading it seems staining them is a better choice for longevity and low maintenance.

Has any one done this and if so which brand & type of stain did you use.

PS not necessarily looking for an exact match to the wood panels colour as in many cases they fade/grey over time unless stained themselves. So, unsure on concrete stains colours.......but possibly just a pale to mid brown?

TIA:)

I've used pigment powder in cement before, there's loads of makes and colours so I reckjon you'll get pretty close to the colour you want.

Hmmm! a good insight but I will not be making concrete;)
Not sure that’s going to help in pre fabricated fence posts.
Yup, as above :)

This link may give you some ideas.

Thanks for the link :)

Though that is for paint.... especially interior floor painting to seal the surface.

That is why I mentioned staining as that is apparently better in external applications i.e. it is absorbed by the surface layer of the concrete and unlike paint does not trap moisture plus needs no maintenance coats (though might fade.....but time would tell)

Thank you for the link........will read up and see what makes sense for our needs.

I was also hoping that some other TPers might have done this with their concrete posts and therefore have some personal experience recommendations  (y)

Sorry not had any personal experience. It was just a google search.

I stain the concrete posts at the same time as the fence.
It seems to need redoing every couple of years.

THIS is what I use ( obviously buy the colour to suit you)

That killed that thread stone dead then :D

But you asked for "real time" experiances, I was the only one that gave it.
The only one you never replied to, at the time.
@dejected of MK :(

:p

OK, OK , calm down...... ;)

Yes, the only TPer who 'used' a product :)

AFAIK that Ronseal product is a paint rather than a stain. A stain with concrete from what I have read, so far, is preferable as the stain is absorbed but a paint 'seals' the surface of the concrete and is potentially detrimental re: trapping moisture in the concrete

No its a stain, it soaks in, to both the wood and the concrete.
Paint may last longer as it seals the surface, but I have no experience of that.
As above its no big deal to do it every couple of years.

I just checked it was 3 years ago since I bought that, I looks like it will need doing again before the winter sets in.

Ah! ok will have a look at the colours available........we have bought/will buy pressure treated panels with >10 years guarantee. So don't see the need for treatment in the first couple of years.

Therefore colour wise we will be looking at a light brown to compliment the panel colours:)

Depending, some wood, when pressure treated, won't take up a stain.
You may need to check before you buy, what ever you buy.
