I've upgraded to a Canon EOS 40d but I can't find a decent setting for non-flash stage photography from the audience. Can anyone help? My current lens is the Canon EFS 17-85. Thanks. Mike.

Welcome to TPF!

The answer depends on largely on what's happening on the stage but basically try this:

Put the camera in Av mode and use the widest aperture available. Increase the ISO setting until you get a shutter speed of 1/60s or quicker depending on how fast the action on stage is.

Set the WB to tungsten as Auto will do a poor job of guessing with coloured lighting.

Finally dial in some Exposure Compensation from -1 for a very dark background to +1 if it's very light. Take a few shots and review them and adjust the EC as needed.

I set the aperture as required then up the ISO until I get a shutter speed I can get away with.

So much depends on the amount of reflected light you've got to use. I do quite a bit of theatre photography and sometimes there is plenty of light, sometimes its dark and moody and you've not got a lot to play with.

Basically Av mode (Aperture Priority) and increase the iso until you've got a shutter speed you can consistantly get good results with, say 1/60th sec.
