Anyone has experiance stacking Teleconvertors?

I want to increase the range of my 300f2.8IS... ive currently got a Canon 1.4xTCII which gives me 420f4IS.. which is nice but i still crave a something a little longer. :nono:

So im looking at getting another TC, im not sure whether to get a 1.4xTC or a 2xTC... if my maths work it would give me...

300+1.4x+1.4x = 588f5.6IS

or

300+2x = 600f5.6IS
and
300+2x+1.4x = 840f8IS

I realise both options would negatively impact the image quality, but im unable to find any sites that directly compare the two setups... anyone got any insight into the differant setups they would like to share.

Eventually i will simply buy the 600f4IS... but atm that isnt an option.

I have stacked Canon 2xII + 1.4xII on a 600 f4 and still retained auto focus as it does report the 1.4xII converter.

You cannot stack 2 Canon 1.4xII converters on each other without having a extender ring between as the class sticks out too far on the converter - check out your 1.4x

While we were away I used the 1.4x & the 2x TC with the 70-200mm lens for the first time. It was in good light, but I was astonished to find that not only did I maintain AF, the camera also gave me a max aperture of f5.6 - rather than the f8 it's supposed to give. I've heard that some third party TC's aren't recognised but both of mine are Canon ones. As for IQ - yes, there is some drop off but overall I was pleased with the results. I'd say go for the 2x as it'll give you more options overall than a second 1.4x

I use the 2x with my 300 2.8 & notice very little change in quality (I'm sure there will be a difference but I cannot see it - eg. my recent marmot shots were taken with a combination of with & without convertor & I definately could not guess between the two.)
I'd definately be interested in seeing how the stacked convertors affect IQ as I'm considering a 1.4x convertor in the very near future. I'll let you know if I find anyone with the 1.4 that lives close & is kind enough to let me test it out.
The 2x convertor is well worth it though IMHO

On my 20D I can get a 2x and a 1.4x (both Mk2) converters on my 300 f2.8 and get acceptable quality.

Carl.

Hi,

I did a review a couple of months ago, on this forum, of the 400mm 5.6L, with an EF 1.4, and a DG pro 2X, both on their own, and stacked..

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=18249

I can say quite happily, that on my 1D IIN, both AF and AE were not compromised, and the results were astonishing.

I've got the x1.4 also and have been thinking about the x2 - will watch this thread with interest :)

If someone wants to buy me a 2X converter to compliment my 1.4X, I'll be quite happy to go out and do the tests for youz all. :D
