I'm thinking of getting an ST-E2 but can't find the full specs. Anyone knows a link to the full specs

I know it does ETTL, can it do HSS, can I use it with the AI Servo on the camera switched on, etc...

To those who own one, what problems do you encounter when using?

Thanks

I have one,

If you PM me your address I'l post the handbook down to you as long as you promise to post it back.

It suits me but my flash work isn't the best.

I have read that it needs line of sight to work and will not trigger the flash behind the ST-E2 but mine does, at least it does inside, never tried it outside.

Distance wise outside it can trigger from about the peanalty spot to the goal mouth.

Let me know.

Hi Admirable,
Thanks for your input and offer. I was told that the ST-E2's AF assist lamp wont work (just like my 580ex) if the camera is on AI Servo so its not suitable for what I'm thinking of using it.
Cheers

No it deffo no worky on servo mode. :shake:

I found this out when I tried to take some pics of bats flying around the house one night.

Can someone who has bought an ST-E2 recently say if this is still pretty much all the info you get with it?

I was expecting there to be some info about how to get best range out of it (and an indication of the range)

It states there it is about 12-15m. I presume that is outside. I have used mine inside a very large hall and it was perfect but I suppose it would be bouncing off the walls.

As far as range outside in bright sunlight, I have never required to have a multiple setup outside in bright sunlight more than 15m away and I can't see it happening soon.

I have one, didn't think it needed LOS to work
however if you're very close to the flash I find it doesn't work, (within 0.5 metre)
for example holding the flash over your head for off axis light.
otherwise pretty reliable

out side bright sun light you can be down to 1 or 2m of coverage and its hit and miss at best to be honest. Works fine on servo mode never had a issue and you'll get HSS just no second curtain sync.

You can do two groups of lights with ettl and a third as manual lights.
It uses weird batterys from the days of film and its easy to forget to turn it off.

its cheeply built but I love it for quick and easy lighting in a rush.

what elts do you want to know?

Are you sure it works on servo mode? People say it doesn't.
I think this unit is due an upgrade:D.

For the avoidance of doubt, it triggers the flash/s on servo but the focus assist beam does not work on servo mode.

When I owned one it definitely worked in AI Servo mode, but the flash would be set to manual power.

Works in Al servo with flash set to ettl, just tried it.

Sorry, I meant the ST-E2's Focus Assist Beam doesn't work (light up) with AI Servo.

Thank's again Admirable:thumbs:.

They do work on manual.

Would two heads in one group and one in the other not work?

Anyone know if the st-e2 lets you into the flash menu's found on the 40d-50d-5dmkII etc?

Cant afford a 580exII to enable this function seem like a con by Canon to get another £350 out of you.... with Nikon its, free! Grrr :(

What do you mean it's free with Nikon?

Can you put a Canon flash on a Nikon and access the menu?

I don't get you. So why do you need the menu anyway if you don't have a flash?

I mean Nikons wireless system is free, In terms of the built in flash being able to be used as a master and a straight forward menu system for setup out of the box..

To achieve this with a Canon you have to use a 580exII to enable the in camera wireless menu (Menu>Settings>Flash Control>External flash>Wireless setup) which is far superior to setting up via the flash.

I have 2 550ex's and a 420ex. Currently i have to use a 550ex on camera and do all the set up via this flash which can be fiddly and time consuming.

I am asking if an ST-E2 allow me to get into the wireless flash menu in camera (as a 580exII allows)?

No

I just checked that with CanonBob's ST-E2.. and it doesn't.

You'd have thought that it would...seems a bit odd to me and slightly off-putting for getting one.

Can anyone confirm if this is true on a 5D2?

You really don't need to, the adjustments can be made from the rear of the ST-E2
