Looking for a SSD about 500GB and I see them advertised as 480GB and others are 512GB, what is the difference apart from price and disk size?

The controller technology. The ones that are not multiples of 2 tend to use compression on storage to increase storage so the manufacturers allow themselves some breathing room.

So would I be far better with the 512GB or is there not much difference?

Not that much difference these days unless you want the last few MB/s under all circumstances. Personally, I'd get the Crucial MX100 if I were buying today.... (I may be buying a couple soon!)

Can't go wrong with the Samsung 840 pro series,or the older 830,mine have never had an issue in three years.

Aren't most drives all 550/550 or thereabouts these days? I thought the main difference was warranty/estimated write lifetime....

In the end I bought a Crucial M550 512GB

I have disconnected the optical drive and used the sata port for my SSD, this leaves the other two sata ports for other hard drives. I have an external usb CD/DVD drive I can use if I need it

It is sata 2 that's why I've bought the PCi card above. Will change back when I get the card.

It's set to ahci in the bios

thanks for all your help guys! :)
