SRGB Jpegs look darker in IE/FF than in Photoshop

If I load an sRGB Jpeg in Photoshop, then load exactly the same Jpeg in my browser and flick between the two windows, it's obvious that the browser is displaying it darker than Photoshop does. I'm not talking a massive amount, just enough to clog up the shadow detail, that's all.

I'm sure this is probably because Photoshop is a colour-managed application and web browsers aren't but I thought that converting to sRGB prior to saving fixed issues like this. I can get round it fairly easily by applying the following curve to an image to kick the shadows up a bit before saving the Jpeg but it's not an ideal solution:

So if anyone knows of anything better, please let me know. Thank you.

To summarise my workflow:

Shoot RAW
Convert to Adobe RGB Tiff file
Edit in PS using said Tiff and save master PSD
Convert to sRGB once editing all done
Save as Jpeg
Close everything in PS
Open the Jpeg I just saved
Start IE or Firefox
Load the very same Jpeg
Compare Photoshop version with browser version by alt-tabbing between windows
Post on forum about how browser version is darker
Buy tropical Fanta and await replies

Ahh there's the problem, you ain't been Tango'd :cuckoo:

But, Ive just been going thorough a few of my shots, tabbing between PS and IE and there's no difference. But then I don't do things 'properly' cos I haven't been converting the shots to sRGB before saving to jpeg and uploading. I tend to RAW edit initially in Elements 4, saving as a 16 bit Tiff. Then work on the image in CS2, saving a master as a 16 bit Tiff and resizing and producing an 8 bit to jpeg for the web. All this is done using the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space

Fingerz – To view the same colour and brightness output as your web browser you need to goto View->Proof setup and change that to srGB and make sure view proof setup is ticked. From memory the shortcut is CTRL + Y

After some experimentation I think it might be a perceptual problem - my internet browser has a white background and Photoshop has a grey one, making shadows seem darker in the browser.

You could always try changing the background in Photoshop.

Select the fill tool, select your colour, and hold down shift, while you click the border :)

Only works if you don't have picture windows maximised, which I do. There's no way to change the background colour of maximised windows. But I knocked up a webpage with the same grey background to show the image on.

It does :) I've just tested it.

Works with both windowed mode, maximised, and full screen mode.

Can I take this yellow off my Photoshop now? My eyes are haemorrhaging :D
