I seem to be incabable of taking a photo where the horizion is straight, most of my photos include sunsets and sea scenes.
So i was wondering if its possible to straighten them up at all?

Thanks in advance :)

Most editing programs will include some method for straightening your photos. What program do you use?

Hey Thumper!
When you crop an image in most editing programs you get an option to rotate the crop by grabbing one of the corners. This usually gives you a grid over your image which you can line up with the horizon to help get things level. Even if you don't crop the image before rotating, they will shrink the crop to best fit the image when you level it up.
A few links here which might help you out.

I'm the same. At one point I even though the camera was somehow faulty, as no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get a perfectly level horizon.

Lightroom fixes everything.

At the moment I only have Photoscape as I got a new laptop and my photoshop wont reload on to my new one, will try getting reloading it again though, think it was cs3 or 5.

Thanks for all the advice!

I tried one of those sprit level things years back and it's so small it's not really accurite, you need about 6 inches long at least, even builders use a metre length just to get your worktop right.

A tip for Canon users (don't know about the rest) if you don't have a spirit level.

When viewing through the viewfinder, line up the focus point squares with the horizon. Then when you take your shot you will have a level shot.

For the fast stone, could you tell me where to go, i've downloaded it and gone to the crop board and looked at other bits but cant see anything about the straighten tool?

Thanks

I don't have it available to me now, but if I recall correctly, double click the image thumbnail to go to full screen, move the mouse to the left and one of the options in the menu that appears is 'straighten'.

does your camera have a 'superimpose a grid in the viewfinder' function?

I'm afraid I don't, I'm a mere Nikonite. My old D70 has a 'composition guide' which can be switched on in the viewfinder. It shows the rule of thirds, with handy vertical and horizontal straight lines.

I'm sure a Canonite will be along shortly.

I'll have a play about and look around the internet, see what I can see :) Thanks for the idea

Not on a 350d. You will need to use the method I posted earlier regarding using the focus squares in the viewfinder.

Not just me who does this then.

:plusone:

Also, use the upper or lower focus squares "row" instead of the middle one's, moves your horizon away from the centre then which is generally better.

If you have Photoscape your problem is solved. It will straighten horizons.

GENIUS!

I always tilt my camera very slightly on the left side, as when I push the shutter button down, it levels the camera :D

I line up the grids, then when I look at the scene i almost aways tilt the camera slightly, I even use the inbuilt level in the D7000 and I still get wonky horizons ! ( artist effects  )
Lightroom allows you to sort it out:lol:

Yep, turn the grid on in the viewfinder. I find it the best way to help get straight horizons.

Any slight outage will see the need for editing (Lr & Ps (Ctrl+A > Ctrl+T > Adjust to straighten by dragging the mouse up or down to the left or right of the image (zoom in to fine tune) > Enter > Crop)

My horizons are always straight and level,

the camera however ... :)
