Hi I was wodering if anyone could shed some light on a small problem for me (not that one the missus knows all about that)?

I have a Sigma 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 zoom but when it is autofocusing it has an awfull squeal. I spoke to the local photography shop and they suggest that it needs to go back to Sigma with a minimum charge of £40.

I wanted a better idea of what it could be first before doing this as i don't know if it would be cheaper to just replace the lens rather than send it off and find out it will cast a fortune to repair so then scrap it and lose £40 that could of gone on a new lens?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Is it under warranty? Might be worth contacting Sigma directly and seeing what they say.

No warranty as i bought the lens with the camera second hand, or at least not aware that it has warrenty on it.

What about when you're manually focusing....does it have a similar squeal?

How does it 'feel' when you rotate the focusing ring? Does it feel like there's any grinding in there? It could be that something is stuck in there perhaps, or it may just be the motor that's on its last legs.

Is it the APO or the non APO version.

I had that on my sigma 70-300 apo, it was actually in warranty but lent it to my mate and he has had it a year now lol. It still works ok but its only the auto focus that squeals like hell, which is annoying when im next to him trying to take pictures of animals :| I would be inclined not to spend £40+ on a repair when you can find one new for £99 (especially as it was second hand) I hope you find a suitable solution for your needs.

Cheers all and Marcel it is fine when you manualy focus nothing scraping in their, and i think you couls be right Mtx i think i will have to continue to keep annoying Neonpollen lol.

I think i might wait till it dies and buy a pro lens next year (well if i can get away with it without the missus finding the price of it).

If anyone has any quik fix solutions then hey i'm up for those.

Cheers
