Finally got my new set up all installed but not entirely happy with the colours on screen so time to invest in calibration.

The huey pro looks interesting with the ambient light adjustment but some of the reviews seem to prefer the spyder. Any opinions from users?

I have a Spyder2express and it makes a hell of a difference when you switch it on and off, definately worth the investment and because there is a new version out you can pick them up for £55 from warehouse express.

To be honest I don't think it makes a bit of difference which one you go for as long as it does the job. :)

Hi I have the huey pro which i got from kerso, works well

I have a Spyder Express2 which I hate. Never does the same calibration twice, even if you do it straight after and the before and after view is always the same (even after calibration).

Thanks guys, the range of replies confirms the difficulty in choosing

I've got an Eye One Display 2 which I'm very happy with :)

Unless precise colour is critical for you I think either will do. I've got a Huey (upgraded to Pro) and it does a great job. Not 100% but close enough that I don't need to worry. If I were taking on jobs photographing artwork, etc. then I'd need something better.

I've got an eye one works great.

Suggestion :Why not ring ColourConfidence. All they do is colour management equipment and training.I've always found them to be impartial as they sell all the units mentioned in these posts.

I have the Huey pro (also via kerso) and it did a terrible job. It decided that there just wasn't enough green on my screen so adjusted the colours so much that everything became green. Unplugged and uninstalled the software and never been used since. A quick search of the 'net and it's a common problem on LCD monitors.

Are you running it on Vista as vista is a bit of a swine and resets the profile back to its original, and doesn't retain the information from the Spyder

I may be mistaken (someone will correct me I'm sure) but I understand that the Huey range calibrates for CMYK colours as would be used by a professional print house; the Spyder calibrates for RGB, which most "home" & semi-pro printers use. Might be worth researching this?

I've not heard anything about the Huey being CMYK based, you get to choose the colour temp and gamma (D65 and 2.2 for sRGB which is the default option). With the original Huey they used "friendly" names such as Web & Photo, Gaming, etc. which may have to led to the idea?

thanks for all the info folks, have actually gone for an eye-one LT, should do the job nicely :)

Let us know how you get on with that. I am thinking about getting a calibration device and was wondering which one to get.

Well, arrived today and this thing is really easy to set up and use. Simply install the bits of software, connect the unit up to a USB port and that's it.

Start the colour match programme and it goes through a number of things like white point, RGB settings, then does a longish colour check. Once it's finished it creates a profile, saves it and sets it as the default.

Results? This monitor had a definite bluish tinge. I'd suspected that looking at some of the images on here but this confirmed it. Now to have a look through sone of my old shots to see what they're "really" like

Overall I'd probably recommend it, nice and simple to use and results look promising

Tip

With the Eye One, when the main menu starts, go to the help section and get it to check for updates. Downloads them automatically for you

Exactly what I found. I've calrbrated several LCD monitiors and they all had a blue tint. I also calibrated 3 x Formac 2010 LCD monitors on macs and there is no real decernable difference after calibration. So  to Formac :)

Sorry to drag an old thread up but i'm interested in the comment about Vista having problems with colour profiles. Is there one, and if so what is it/is it sortable.

I'm contemplating buying one but as both the PC's run Vista it would be a bit stupid if it didn't work.

Also what's the difference between the standard Huey and the Huey Pro, is it just software?

Thanks :)
