Sky news have a story where 4 police forces have plans to bring in spy drones that are used in Afghanistan to spy on motorists and rural burglaries (so they say ) before 2012 :suspect:
You couldn't make it up, while speed camera's are being torn down because they aren't making revenue probably due to satnav's and more vigilant motorists  they find another way to extract money AGAIN !!!!

God forbid if you stray over a white line or cut a corner, does anyone know how low they fly ?, get yout tele's out when they come whineing over, best shot gets a ticket :rules:

In so far as they could take the place of helicopters for the jobs they do currently they must be a good investment, they 'should' be cheaper to buy, certainly will be cheaper to maintain and run.

The helicopters have the advantage of having 3 pairs of human eyes on board, they're tried and tested and they work superbly. I have no idea about maintenance costs, but I expect any new technology and the facilities to accommodate them would also be expensive.

I think the main advantage of drones is that they don't risk soldiers' and aircrews' lives in dangerous observation missions - that scenario doesn't really apply in the UK.

A quick google suggests the cost of a drone is around £20-25,000 ($30,000) maybe add another £50,000? to bring it up to spec for the job, running costs? tba but a drone can stay on site for up to 15 hours the article says and at a guess can be controlled by one person working in shifts, cameras monitored by as many people as needed as and when they are needed.. A police helicopter costs about £4.5mil fully equipped and £1.2+ million per year running costs. Purely in financial terms it makes a lot of sense.

I can see the market in high velocity air rifles will get a boost from that. Moving targets and no threat to life - excellent challenge :)

What is the worry with these things then?

Surely they are just a mobile CCTV camera? And as such still need a human person to look at the image feed

:D

The thing with the drones is as automation moves on they do the mechanicals of flying themselves leaving the operator to do the watching, also a man can run 2 drones and look at the relevant one.

I think people are worried they will be everywhere at once and follow you home ect (kinda like cctv tbh)

I suppose its too much to hope that they will be helping to catch burglars, muggers, rapists etc and not making sure I put my bin out on the right day.

Hmm...on second thoughts, wouldn't it be an infringement of the burglar/mugger/rapist's human rights?

Hmm, Maybe they could go the whole hog.
fit it out with some air to ground anti Rapist/ mugger/ chav/ burglar/ etc weapon.

Mugger tries to mug someone, gets stunned by high velocity tazer. police on scene shortly to take into custody.

hmmm, I'll grab me coat............

(but how long before its a reality?

We haven't even got PDA's deployed force-wide yet, and we're limping along on Windows XP computers.

I think it'll be a very long time

If you're doing nowt wrong then you've nothing to worry about ;)
How about if I come round and look through you bedroom window then? If you're doing nothing wrong then you have nothing to worry about.

I'm not sure how likely this is to happen - I remember reading a short while ago that the Army are unable to train on their Reaper drones in the UK as they are not licenced for use here and it is illegal to fly them.

On second thoughts, if the police want to use them, that should facilitate the location of a red tape loophole in no time!

Not necessarily, ANPR has long since been in use with speed camera systems and other implementations, as well as facial recognition to spot criminals and terrorists. If you have enough (misguided) faith in such a system they could run completely autonomously.

Having sex with my wife would be completely legal and we'd be doing "nothing wrong". I still wouldn't want you peering through my window though. In fact, then, you would be the one having your collar felt. :)

I hate people in my space, only a select few people ever come into my home. In public I hate the fact that all my steps (well, wheel turns?) can be traced and such like by people sat behind computers... if it was real people I don't think I'd be quite as bothered and as for getting jiggy, well, isn't the rule about doing it in public just "don't get caught"? the rule I've always played by anyway

Everybody is so against this kind of thing (big brother, 1984), yet it happens before our very eyes with very little resistance...

I'm perfectly happy with keeping an eye on the bad guys, but invasion of privacy of completely innocent people is another matter.

At 5000ft and probably over a mile away, virtually silent and painted NATO european sky low vis grey you probably won't even see it, let alone be able to shoot at it.

Do you really think those well armed locals in dusty parts are just so stupid they can't see them and thats why they get whacked by them?

Still, it will at least be quieter if they get them - the other week my house sounded like the DShB were air assaulting my village just like in Afganistan :help:

Well thats how invasion of privacy is sold to the general public my friend...as a means of keeping an eye on the bad guy...think terrorism act!
