First foray into DSLR photography and purchased a Canon 40D with 17-85mm Kit Lens. Testing it out this weekend with pictures of autumn trees against a blue sky. On all the images with a blue sky there was a small circle in the top right hand quadrant which was duller. This was apparant on all pics which had a single colour backdrop. Fairly easy to fix with a bit of editing but wondered what it might be. Dirt on sensor perhaps? If so how can I clean?
 
Try reading this thread. I cleaned my own after reading this but bought swabs rather than making some.
 
It sounds like dirt on the sensor to me although I suppose it could be to do with the lens. The easiest way of testing it would be to try a different lens and see if the problem persists.

You can get a sensor cleaning kit from most of the big retailers (and i'm told its quite easy to do (although I chickened out and sent mine to Canon for a service). However you make it sounds as though you have just bought the equipment so if I was you i'd hot foot back to the shop and get them to sort it out!
 
Thanks for the feedback. Only just bought the camera on-line from the Canon Outlet (refurb) which saved a lot of money but this is the downside I guess. Although it's covered with a 1 year mfrs warranty I don't think I'll bother sending it back unless a sensor clean doesn't do the trick.
 
It's no unusual for a DLSR to have sensor dust straight out of the box. My original 300D had dust under the filter and Canon had to replace the entire sensor to sort it. Try a rocket blower first, it might shift. Failing that a search of the forums will turn up lots of advice on cleaning sensors.
