Just wondered if any of you sports photographer provide poster options along with standard prints. It seems In the US these are very popular (I've been on Fredmiranda :whistling:).

Anyway I thought i'd do a player specific one of my local cricket team, put it on my website and see if I get any enquiries. Very early stages but this is what I have so far, what do you think?

I know if this type of thing was offered to me or my wife we'd jump at it. Would love to get some good pictures of my two doing their kickboxing.

That looks brilliant, and something parents would not miss out on. Have you created a template that you just drop in the photos,or do you have to make a new poster each time?

I have seen a few free templates made for photoshop, but they seem to be American football themed.

Cheers mate

This is the first one I have made. I used Photoshop but I can soon make this into a template for other posters. Just wanted to get some general feedback really

its a good idea... used to see them all the time on POTN ... i would offer them but havent got time to make them to be honest :(

I'll endorse this. When my kids are older, if I'm ever presented with something like this, I'd pay good money for it.

BTW as we should all know.. there are NO RULES regarding photographing children... however there are guidlines and good practice thingys... one is to NOT put names to childrens pictures.... when publishing to the internet that is :)

Hi Kipax

Do you think the design works. Want to keep it fairly simple so that it's not too much work to change for different players.

if that was a free template i would have and use it yes....

I like it Philip - Simple and effective - how could a parent not buy this :) this is to the first poster - not keen on the other one, sorry

I like both Philip- they look fantastic!

From a sales point of view - I think you need to get buyers to sign up to buy an image prior to editing and make it a ££ canvas/ mounted print to make it worth yours and their while. I think the PP and work is awesome, but as a relative if i was receiving this as a standard print even at a4 size or electronic image I would be hard pushed to part with more than £15ish - which I doubt would cover the cost of your time?

A canvas print or other more treasureable and displayable item on the other hand and I would have a lot more pliable wallet for :)

HTH matey.

Cheers Smooth

I was thinking of making them Large poster and using DSCL just not sure what their large posters are like in terms of quality.

Also I have some spare Nielsen frames which I could use on the second design.

Like it. Not sure how the USA togs have it setup but to me the profit looks to lie in the bespoke market?

Interesting one. Out of interest only - how long do you think it would take you to produce each one? I know you have templates but each shot would need a degree of work?

The first I could do in 30 mins.

The second one, i've been on all day to be honest but once I get it finalised I reckon I could reproduce this in 45 mins.

Hmm. So you would be looking for at least the £15 mentioned above. Deffo think you have great idea and bespoke jobs would be the way to go. Had you got any ideas of what to sell them as? You mentioned prints above.

We can see the artistic merit and effort that has gone into them - my worry isnthat by selling them as prints your customers could undervalue them.

The second design would be the kids favourite - could be good on items such as key rings and mugs etc

Does anyone know where to get free templates (like the sports one here) as I suck at Photoshop.

Methinks if you asked kids what they wanted it would be No1.

I've done posters for a few years like these - and a wide range of others..

Generally, the great unwashed public equate price with size - and not how clever or time taken - the first poster you can bang together in a minute or two (if you didn't have the cutout leg) - the trendier grunge one would take much longer - yet most of the public would pay the same - and would pay more for larger rather than smaller...

We do a A3 print with a calendar - which are really fast to produce - yet sell easily...

Here's one of my old designs - the colour burst can be changed to suit the belt colour

The problem was getting good high percentage sales from these.....

The best way was to pick out a couple of the "alpha" kids - and print a sample 16x20 or whatever and hope that others wanted too...

Our A3 calendar - which sells £15 - £10 depending on commissions to the group etc - take no extra work

This sample image we tried to sell as a poster size - 16x20 at £50 but need to be far higher - the products we're trying now sell for £99 - but we charge £33 to their card 3 times - once when they take away, and then 1 and 2 months hence.... (there is an amount that a wife/husband can spend without asking the others permission - but by making the payment £33 they can claim that's what they spent! )

Philip,

Great idea, and well executed :)

I like the first and the second, but the third is probably getting a bit too much - when I saw the second in the frame mockup, it looked pretty classy, as opposed to you just happened to apply a random filter in photoshop.

Why don't you offer both, or even a third / fourth option? You'd be able to capture more sales as if you only offered one, and parents / kids didn't like the style you may not get any sales?

I do think that you'd be able to get your time down (excluding printing) in photoshop even more than you say. Once you've done a few, they'll be quick. In fact I think the second could be quicker to do, as although the layout of the first one works for this particluar photo, you may have problems with some other sports which may not work as well with that sweeping curve and end up spending time adjusting that too!

Good luck with it all

Just out of interest how much would you be willing to pay for something like this?

I'm trying to get an idea of pricing before I put them on my site

Excellent idea. I'm sure a lot of parents would snap something like this up.

Phil,

Hat off to you mate, I know that if I offered that to my Basketball kids, (if they had the money to pay) I could give up my day job.

For me, #1 would be the kids choice every time, #2 would be a great 'present' for the kid on their birthday.

Keep going pal, im very impressed with your determination to find 'yourself' and to offer something original.

The first looks brilliant, really impressive. Not too keen on the other two. I think for an A3 size, £20 is a fair price.
