Sports photographers - protecting cameras?

Yes
I was watching the Man city / Stoke football match this afternoon and saw the remote triggered cameras behind the goal. All nicely covered up in waterproofed jackets etc, but I think I saw the ball knock one over.

Do these ever get damaged? Does anyone think of some extra protection? I was thinking a couple of metal hoops over the top pushed into the turf would add extra protection without getting in the way of the shot.

Anyone else ever get random thoughts?:D

When I set mine up I always grab the net and pull it back as far as I can and place the camera where the ball can't reach it. I also place the camera in the middle of the goal so there is less chance of a shot that goes just wide hitting your camera and i never put my pocket wizard on the camera, so if it does get hit it wont snap off and leave half of it behind.

Cheers for that.

My wife thinks I'm getting obsessed. I was playing spot the camera/lens yesterday :D

The biggest worry i have during the game though is if there is a pitch invasion and some scrote runs off with my camera.

I do the same...plus I'm not using the best kit! 30D and a cheap 18-50 sigma ;)

Worse than a scrote...Marc Aspland's remote was snatched up by Michael Essien (i think) after the FA Cup final last year and he went off snapping loads of shots of the players celebrating!

Forgive the curiosity, but if you don't use a PW, what do you use to remotely fire the camera?

I do that when I'm watching films - I often find my eye is drawn to the bokeh or the fancy effects and not the action :cuckoo:

Slightly off topic but...

I had a laugh and quick google on this and came up with THIS.

Hes a cheeky one that Essien.

I just connect the pocket wizard to the remote cable from the camera and leave it next to the camera with the antenna sticking upwards.

You mean you were there watching it, or watching it on TV? I was there shooting it :) Can't afford a 3rd camera though :'(

I love it how the credited Essien. It was funny but all the pictures are naff apart from the one of all the snappers.

Watching on TV, nice and warm with a beer ;)

See, I was thinking cloche hoops would protect the camera perhaps? You'd only need a couple spaced out less than a balls width.

Well, he's only a footballer...not a tog!! :D

Didnt realise it was Brad...thought it was Marc's camera he'd nicked.

So who owns the copyright of the photos that Essien took?

Essien - as the man who pressed the button...lol

At least they got a good story out of it...

Liked the bit about finding half-way through the match that another tog was using the same channel...how annoying?
