With possibly the most open competition in recent years, who gets your vote?
And who do you think will win?

Rebecca Adlington,
Nicole Cooke,
Chris Hoy,
Rebecca Romero,
Bradley Wiggins,

Lewis Hamilton,
Joe Calzaghe,
Andy Murray.

Hoy, Adlington and Hamilton the obvious top three??
 
So who is it that picks the contenders for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year...? All very worthy contenders I might add, but I wonder why is the person who was nominated and won the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year not nominated on this list? Any English rugby fans on the selection committee I wonder... :)
 
I absolutely agree with you Neil, 100%. He wouldn't win it because he is a Welsh rugby player, but it does rather make a mockery out of the whole competition though doesn't it.

A Welsh rugby player wins BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year, and the same Welsh rugby player wins World Rugby Player of the Year, but that same Welsh rugby player doesn't even get nominated for the BBC National Sports Personality of the Year award! Phah... typical English Beeb.

Nomination process of contenders for final 10:

The nominations are provided by a panel of over 30 leading sporting experts from a selection of newspaper sports editors (national and regional) and magazines.

This process begins on Monday 3 November and ends on Friday 14 November. The sporting experts will be asked to name their 10 contenders in alphabetical order and not in any order of preference.

The shortlist of 10 contenders will be announced during 'The One Show' on Monday 1 December (BBC One, 1900 GMT) and will also appear on the BBC Sports Personality website.

In the event of a tie at the end of the nomination process, the Sports Personality production team will contact the Sports Personality former winners judging panel for their preferred 1-2-3 contenders in order. The panel consists of six former winners from a cross section of sports.

Three points will be awarded for first place, two points for second place, one point for third place. The tied contender with the most points will go through to the final shortlist of 10. In the unlikely event there is still a tie, the tied contender with the most first places from this second round of voting will go through to the final 10.

Vote on the night

The public only will decide the winner from the shortlist of 10 contenders during the live show with a phone vote. This will be overseen by an independent adjudicator.

A full list of the number of votes polled by each contender will be available on the BBC Sports Personality website after the show along with all terms and conditions.
 
So must be not enough Welsh sports experts in the media.........

I would like Ben Ainslie to win, who is a bit of an unsung sproting hero. However, it does call itself personality, and although I am sure he is a nice guy, I don't recall personality coming through that much.

Calzaghe has personality, but he won last year.

Adlington has personality, and so does Hoy. Again, I think Hamilton does.
 
For me it should be a two horse race between Adlington and Hoy, with Rebecca Adlington wining in the end partly due to the achievement being more historic and unexpected..

Unfortunately Hamilton will win more than likely it ( I just can't stand him)

I wondering if this is all to do with timings more than anything else and those in th very late stages of the year, don't really get a look in.

This had been a family debate for years.. Sports ''personality'' or Sports achievement of the year. 2 very different things.

Prediction:

1. Hamilton
2. Adlington
3. Cooke.

Delighted to be wrong though.

Adlington

She won two gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in the 400 m and 800 m, breaking the 19 year-old world record of Janet Evans in the 800 m final. Adlington is Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908 and is Great Britain's most successful Olympic swimmer in 100 years.

Cooke

2008 Summer Olympics in the Women's Road Race where she won the gold,the 200th gold for Great Britain in the the Modern Olympic Games.

She became the first woman to become the road race World Champion and Olympic gold medalist in the same year.


Hamilton

World F1 champion, first British winner in 12 years

Hoy

He is a multiple world champion and Olympic Games gold and silver medal winner. With his three gold medals in Beijing 2008 Hoy became Scotland's most successful Olympian,[3] the first Briton to win three medals in a single Olympic games since Henry Taylor, in 1908, and the most successful Olympic male cyclist of all time.

Also the youngest ever winner, and won it in only his second season (coming 2nd last year) He's also one of the most exiting drivers for years and doesn't give a monkeys to the FIA. (Also while is team were under pressure from the FIA).

I'm not biased, you just gave a very short précis of his achievements this year.

wasn't Rebecca Romera one of the few to Medal in 2 unrelated sports in the olympics? That should count for something..........
 
Got to admit the show does have ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ factor! What twit came up with that steep ramp some people have to walk down?! Even Sue Barker remarked how well Rebecca Addlington did to walk down it in the shoes she was wearing!
 
I'm chuffed to bits that Chris Hoy won the main award and the British cycling team got the team award. Adlington's third place was well deserved.
We thought Hamilton would get it, but personally, I think the right man won the award. He's a great ambassador, not just for cycling but for British sport in general.

I'm chuffed that Hoy won. I really didn't want Hamilton to win it. Agreed he is a great driver and won the world championship, but I don't think he is as great a sports personality as Chris Hoy. Anyway, congratulations Chris!
 
glad lewis didnt win it and hoy did, lewis will (unless soemthing goes deeply arry) be in for it next year where as hoy wont have the chance.

Good for Hoy, major achievement doing what he has done. But i was shocked to see the other cyclist in the list, then find that Vicky Pendleton was not on the list.
