Any Thoughts?

So with darts not being a proper sport, a schoolboy, one who lets the horse do the work, another who rolls downhill, 2 guys who put a ball in a hole, one who has to rest every 3 minutes and one Lady who does it lying down, that leaves one person who plays his sport for 5 days, and someone who does seven sports for hers..............
 
Mark Cavendish rolling downhill :suspect:, like to see anyone on here keep pace with him on the Tour de France. Won 6 stages in 2009 and 5 in 2010 and he is a sportsman. Anyone fancy doing 170km one day then another 165km the following day though the French countryside. Bit more than standing on the oche or sitting on a horse.
 
It's got to be one of the most open fields for years. I'd love Amy Williams to get it, but I can't see it somehow.

**splutter** :lol: pretty much sums up what we said not 10 minutes ago when reading the list. I think the ball chucker is my choice, with the jump/throw/run lady second [I bet she was brilliant at knock-a-door-run and hedge-hopping when she was kid] and waterbaby third place, thuugh in fairness, all 3 deserve it imo ;)


Still, at least no chance of it being some aging puffball player who had evaded the conciousness for years until they called his name out as winner that night nearly a year ago.
 
As an ex top dart player i'd like to see Phil Taylor with 13 world championships in like 15 yrs to be a major contender for it, it's no mean feat i can tell you, umm it's really is a competetive sport which is why it took so long for darts to be recognised as a sport like snooker, golf etc.
Not forgetting Phil losing his MBE for being found guilty of indescent assault on two ladies in his campervan, in which he was arguably setup could jepordise his chances of being sports personality of the year 2010.
 
It has to be David Haye really.
 
Not a racing fan per se, but having seen the jump jockeys in action through work, I'd have to go for AP McCoy. The bravery those guys have is ridiculous! Plus the fact he's been the most successful out of the shortlist for this year.

Second place for me would have to go to Amy Williams, probably for the same reason (ie I wouldn't hurl myself down a frozen track on a baking tray!)
 
But Lee Westwood has been world top ten, slumped down to nearly 300 in the world, and then worked his way back up to being worlds No1 golfer, helped us win the RYder cup and is a really nice guy......Being the first person other then Tiger Woods since I can remember to be world No 1 has to count for something........
 
Jessica Ennis has had a great year, and would get my vote.

But GMac has risen from next to nothing to being 2nd in Europe (incidentally ahead of Lee Westwood). He's 11th in the world, having had a very good Ryder Cup, won the US Open, won the Wales Open, and numerous other tournaments.

Tough call, but I think McDowell just edges it...plus having met them both, Graeme is a little bit nicer (it's a close call though!)

She'll pick up lots of votes on the night when they interview her, she always comes over very well when I've seen her on TV.

You might have to explain yourself here.

Since November 2009 he's had three fights. Fair play, He did well against Valuev, but he's not a boxer - he's a massive brute.

He then fought and (quite predictably) beat and out of form and ageing Ruiz.

I don't want to even have to explain the Audley fight.

Don't get me wrong, he's a cracking boxer and has shown his skill, power and pace since coming from cruiser weight, but it's not been a difficult (and therefore not particularly impressive) year for him.

Let's see if at least one of the Klitscho fights go ahead...
 
Agree, and don't forget we had a boxer win it a couple of yers ago as well.

Jessica Ennis would get my vote. Some dedication involved there. Darts? a pub game, but played by "athletes" (as described by the lunatic that commentates on it):D
 
But is it about acheivment or personality?

Lets be honest, the only ones Imight know a bit about are Tom Daley, Jessica Ennis, Phil Taylor, Graeme Swan, Graeme Mcdowell and Lee Westwood. And I have to know about the last 2. So with Tom Daley being so young, People perceiving Darts as not a sport, Swanny being out the country and not quite being the number one bowler in the world, That leaves Jess Ennis, although an althlete will struggle in a non olympic year and she didn't compete at the commonwealth games, so your left with the 2 golfers. Lee as I have said has had a great year, and had he won a Major he would be a very obvious choice, Graeme Mcdowell has flown this year, hs won a major and all of europe was waiting on him to win the Ryder cup, so he does look good, and comes over very well in the press. But then GOlf isn't to everyones taste, and he doesn't have the same profile as Lee.

thing is though, isn't heptathlon/decathlon really for people who aren't good enough to be the best at any one event, but are better than average in many?

And how many people can achieve such a high standard across a range of varied events? OK, so they're not the worlds fastest/strongest at one event but they're exceptionally talented at many events which require very different abilities and that's an equal talent, in my eyes at least. In my opinion she's an incredible personality and a role model like none of the others in the list.
 
Both Westwood and Mcdowell win in there show peice events, Lee by a mile, and Graeme taking Tiger to a playoff and pipping him. That has to do them both some good!

Just jump on the back and hold on while the horse does the hard work.

Would liked to have seen Jessica Ennis or Mark Cavendish win the award. With the voting being done on the night, it's a money spinner for the beeb. As seen with last year, the results are not always correct but down to the most calls like x factor.
 
I thought if funny when McCoy said his daughter shouted at him when she found out he was on Sk...(oops) Telly :lol:
 
A reasonably fair result, but I was seriously unimpressed with the general content this year.

Traditionally SPOTY has always been the annual summary across all sports, but this time there was hardly anything apart from the profiles of the potential winners and coverage of the other categories. In addition, as attractive as Katherine Jenkins is, I thought that it was completely inappropriate/poor editing to keep cutting to her during the in-memoriam VT.

Pretty poor production all round AFAIC.

Agreed. CAn't argue with AP Mccoy winning, he has been aroudn a long time and done amazing things on the back of a horse.

I would have liked to have seen GMAC win, but thats cos of a connection, wouldn't have minded Lee Westwood.

Happy to see Jess Ennis get second, as well, she will be a contender in 2012 I hope when she gets olympic gold.

Well done AP.... amazed a golfer didn't win... thought SPOTY was a Golf Awards night in disguise at one point!

Colin Montgomery... Coach of the Year for a 3 day tournament against one team??... and in his speech he credits the coaches??... confused.com... I thought Ian Holloway was more deserving.
