A friend is using sports mode on her Canon camera. What is the shutter speed set at on this "sports" mode setting? Is it different on each make?

surely it cant be set and will change depending on light ?

I believe it will vary depending on the conditions and will be anything from 1/200-1/2000.

I don't really like these sports modes because of that, gives you very little control.

That will be determined by the lighting condition and what the exposure meter identifies as the maximum possible shutter speed to expose the frame. 'Sports' mode is just another Auto mode that prioritizes a faster shutter speed so the camera will open up the aperture and bump up the ISO.

Look at the viewfinder info while moving the camera around. It varies according to lens focal length and available light. My 550D with the 18-135 lens on seems to want to set around 1/320 - 1/400 at the short end and 1/1600 at the long end, but will try to set far lower than that if I point it at something dark and it runs out of aperture and iso. That all seems very hit and miss to me.
Your friend will be far better off learning to use 'semi manual'. It's not hard - chosen aperture, chosen shutter speed and auto iso. There's nothing frightening about the 'M' position on the dial.
First time my camera's been round that side of the mode dial...........................

The camera can only do so much in any auto mode. Regardless of the mode, the camera will still try to deliver an evenly exposed result so if you're pointing at a dark area and you're already at your maximum ISO and aperture, the only option for the camera is to drop the shutter speed.

Tried it with my Nikon and it's the ISO that needs increasing for the shutter speed to stay at 1/1000 sec. Thanks to everyone who replied. I rely on you for help.

If you know that you want to shoot at 1/1000th, just tell your friend to use TV mode (shutter priority) and auto ISO. They can then select 1/1000th shutter speed and the camera will balance that with the aperture/iso.
