Hi I took some photos of a karate tournament. some of the photos came out blury like motion blur. I use a Canon 350D with the standard lens 18 - 55mm and a 430EX speedlight flash set on +1. Camera settings on 80 shutter speed, 5.6Apperture, 400 ISO and shoot in manual mode. That was in a hall with florescent lights. What can i do to prevent that blurr effect. I wanted to load some photos but dont know how to get them up.

I think the only way would be to probably up the ISO to get a faster shutter speed as 80th of a second must have been too slow for how fast they were moving :( 800 ISO on the 350D can be a bit noisy though....so its a tough choice. Either blur or noise :|

Or buy a lens that will go lower than f5.6 - maybe the 50mm 1.8 which should increase your shutter speed, but give you a VERY narrow depth of field

thanx Jimmy any other help. Wheres all the proffessionals

Next time try a shutter speed of 200 (I think the 430ex will fire ok at that speed) iso 400. Check your 350d manual for high speed flash sync to get it right and shoot RAW not jpeg. Raw will give you a little bit of leeway to adjust the exposure as well.

I'm not a professional but I did shoot a karate competition last weekend, there is a thread about it somewhere in this forum. :)

1/80th is way too slow unfortunately. I used 1/125th and still had a lot of motion blur on some of the movement shots, I purposely took shots when people had just finished their moves so they were still. To get freeze frame you would need somewhere in the region of 1/250-1/400th.

Just as an indication the settings I used were f/4-4.5, ISO1600 and 1/125 with no flash (I was in amongst the competition so couldn't use one)

So next time increase your ISO to 800 or even 1600 and increase your shutter speed to something over 1/125 (faster the better). :)

If you had a lens with a wider aperture you could shorten the shutter speed time by quite a bit. I was amazed at the difference my 50mm 1.8 made compared to the kit lens. If you need a zoom lens there are quite a few to choose from with wider apertures.
