Guys, just wondering what ever happened to split screen focusing???

I know that you can get different focus screens for some cameras but are the split ones still around???

I actually stumbled upon an old "how to to put one in a digital rebel" tutorial a while back, what are the uses of them? Better manual focus?

I think so.. its a very acurate way to focus manualy as if the edges of what ever your looking at dont match, then ur oof!! but i suppose that with the clear screens were seeing you can see just how focused you are.. id be interested to hear some views for and against?? oh, and the green blob is a help too..

i miss the old split screen focusing ,always helped a lot on manual focus & i've yet to see 1 for a D 80 .

The youngsters these days don't know they're born

In the olden days when cameras didn't do auto everything (anything in most cases) the split screen was vital as it did indeed split the image up, so straight lines were 'cut' and focussing accurately meant they became straight again.

Modern cameras are so good at focussing now, and the screens so much brighter, they aren't needed as such even for macro work. A few of the top spec cameras offer to swap screens though, so I guess this will still be an option on many

Ah the good old days of manual everything...

Stuff the good old days I say, fab modern cameras allow you to get on with image capture so much more accurately and quickly

Remember Micro prism focusing. I thought it was better than split screen. Only problems was the center micro prism area darkened with longer telephotos

You can buy split screens on ebay for around 20 quid and they pretty easy to fit aswell was thinking about doing to my 400D but then thought better of it because knowing me i knacker it up lol.

If you use old manual focus lenses via adaptor rings then split screen focus will be handy but if you use mostly auto focus lenses then there's little point in installing one.

I'd imagine a split screen would be great for macro work? I'm currently debating one for my 30D but there's the small issue of 9 months warranty left.
