I'm thinking of getting a split focus screen for my D300 dose anyone here have any experiance of these and which one would you reccomend.

Thanks

Have a look at

http://www.katzeyeoptics.com/

I haven't got one but when I had a bug behind my screen, they forwarded me the instructions to remove it FOC.

Good customer service.

If you buy one say Mark (with the bug sent you )

I've put a Katzeyes split screen on my 30D....mainly for accurate manual focus when using an MP-E65.....works a treat for me.

If I may, I have a few questions on this, especially as I am now doing more manual focus shots ...

- Can I have this fitted somewhere here in UK?
- How easy are they to fit?
- What's the point of the "grid" option, since most cameras have this option from within the viewfinder? Will putting one of these change my ability to "switch" on / off the viewfinder's grid?
- Is it worth going for the standard screen, or one with OptiBright?

Thanks for any feedback.

I'm sure that there are places that would fit it for you but it's not a difficult task and having done it once then it becomes quick to change back and forth as required. The first time can be a worry...similar to doing your first sensor clean.

There's no point if your body has a grid option.

Is it worth going for the standard screen, or one with OptiBright?
It really depends on how much light you'll have when you're focussing. For high powered macro (2-3x and upwards) then the OptiBright would be a benefit. For regular macro and non-macro shots it isn't really an issue with faster glass.....I guess f/5.6 on a dull day may be a little testing.

Hope that helps.......

Bob,

Thank you for the feedback, this is very helpful indeed.

I came across these a while ago, but didn't think of taking thigns futher as I was purely on autofocus, which worked very nicely for me. But with my recent shift to manual focus I will need something like this to help me get things dead-on.

One last question ... I guess if I buy this it will come with detailed instructions?

Again, thank you for the feedback.

It didn't include instructions but there are numerous documents available on the web detailing the procedure.....it may even be in your Nikon manual.

Katzeyes normally email a link to a downloadable pdf with instructions for each camera.

that is what they gave me for my D300

I have a few more questions, to anyone using these ...

- Are there any negative issues with using this, that you've personally experiences?
- Anyone in UK sell & install these? I've checked with the manufacturer, but they say no one sells them in UK!

Thanks for any feedback.

The only "downside" is that it gives a darker viewfinder in the area outside the centre prism region.

Thanks, Squirrel-Bob :p

Do you, by any chance know of someone here who sells & installs them?

Don't think anyone does as it is a really simple task.

There's no agent here but you can install it with four thumbs and failing eyesight...I did.

OK, thanks; I will give that a try, then

Have you noticed any difference in focus, meaning have you noticed any discrepency with the cameras autofocus focussing or not?

I dont mean with the installation of the screen

It can't impact on the AF as the AF light path is separate from the focussing screen path....if I understand your question.

Sorry i didnt explain that well, If you use A/F did you notice a difference meaning did the camera A/F correctly or did you notice by the Katzeye the camera was slightly out or not?

Would i notice easier focussing in landscapes?

Ah, sorry, I'm with you now.
I'll have to try it. I fitted the split screen in a body that I only use for macro and hence only focus manually. I'll pop a lens or two on it tomorrow and see if the AF agrees with the screen image when used for distance shots.
