SpidersEye's 52 - Week 8 - Mechanical

Kay - that's true dedication, walking all that way to get your shot.

It's a great (and different) take on the theme and works very well. The colours and textures of the lettering are echoed in the reflected area top right and the wooden cladding adds contrasting texture and colour. Well done, indeed.

Thankyou Jean, it's much appreciated :)

Curves:
Stunning shot - one of the best I have seen so far

Poetry:
Another high standard and well thought out picture that doesn't rely on a poem bing attached to hit the theme.

Thankyou for your kind comments Ian :)

like the mix of textures on the building and lettering.. true dedication walking all that way in the snow too!

Thanks Michelle. I won't be walking quite so far this week :)

Nice to see your work again Kay.

Like the abstract curves of the first :)

Thanks Julian. I went into hiding for a bit, which I shouldn't have done! Glad you like the first pic :)

Good work Kay. I'm with you on the poetry not being your thing. Still it gets you thinking this 52 business.

Thankyou Martin. It certainly does get you thinking! :)

I like the framing and the way it leads your eye through the photo.

Hi Kay,

Sorry I'm so late dropping in this week. There are so many 52 threads this year, it's a challenge to keep up with them, but I'm trying to look at as many as I can.

so walked the 3 miles from my house in the snow to get a picture.

Now that is real commitment to the project!

And I think that this is a really fascinating image. Lovely texture in the wood, interesting angles and I like the reflection of the porch type thingy in the window.
My only issue is that the highlights and reflections make parts of the sign hard to read.

You know what I think would work... focus in close on just the word Poetry, especially with lighting like that, the shadows really add to the word.

I actually think John is spot on there. That could work very well

Thanks Sarah, I know what you mean about how challenging it is keeping up with everyone's threads, I still keep finding ones I haven't read yet!

Thanks for your comments, and I agree about the lighting on the sign. John's idea could be a good one, but I don't know, it's so far to walk ...

Week 3: This week's image is going to be late I'm afraid ... I had an idea that seemed great in my head, but when I tried to carry it out it went horribly wrong :(
I should have made an attempt at it earlier in the week so there was time to think up something else, but I've had such a busy week I ended up putting it off. Hopefully I'll have a Chopped picture to post this week :)

NP - I shall look out for it, I was late me self today but thats half the challenge I guess

Two very good starting shots Kay,The background to the springs really compliments it. Week 2 is refreshing to see something different to what most of us did which was to find a poem we could devise a shot for....Mick

Thanks Terran, I still don't have a picture but I'm determined to get one before the weekend :)

Thankyou for commenting Mick, I'm glad you like the first 2 shots :)

Sorry I haven't commented on anyone's pictures for a while, but I was holding off looking until I'd taken my picture for week 3, which I haven't done yet! I plan to be up to date again by the weekend so I'll get round to looking at as many as possible then :)

Week 4 - Street

I've made a decision to leave week 3 for now and start again with week 4, otherwise I'm going to end up with too much to do!

I was looking forward to the 'Street' theme, as there are alot of opportunities in Edinburgh to take photos to fit this theme. My first thought was to head to one of the tourist areas, such as the Royal Mile, and try and capture some of the atmosphere there. However, I've had a busy week at work plus I'm preparing to move house just now so I haven't had time to go to that side of town, so I decided on a different take on the theme and have attempted here to picture a bit of the character of the Old Town, which I walk through on the way to work. This is Great King Street:

Wk4StreetGK.jpg

I went for a low-angle shot to get a more interesting perspective down the length of the street. I had to alter the perspective a bit, but the post on the left wasn't exactly vertical and so it's confused the angles somewhat. It's been a cloudy day so the light wasn't ideal, which is partly why I've gone for a sepia effect on the picture (and also due to the fact I preferred it that way).

Things I learnt this week:
- I haven't learnt my lesson about leaving things until the last minute
-I still can't take a straight picture, even when I put the camera on the ground

I know exactly what picture I'm getting for Week 5 (weather permitting) but I won't be able to get that until Sunday.

Right, I'm off now to catch up on everyone else's projects. It could be a long night ...

Kay.

I like the low angle and the sepia processing. The image just seems a bit off balance to me, with the bottom right so dark and the top left so light - maybe a hint of vignetting there might help?

I thought Great King Street was the New Town ;). I brave the cobbles on my bike each year during the Festival to see the photo exhibition.

Thanks for commenting. I can see what you mean about the light and dark areas - I never think of vignetting though!

It is New Town - don't know why I typed that! I went to the photo exhibition too. Such a good range of images there :)

Hi Kay,

I wondered where you'd gone. Good to see you catching back up.
Lovely shot for street. Low PoV works well and some very strong lines. The PP complements it perfectly, but now it's been mentioned I'd quite like to see some vignetting added too.

Week 5 - Speed

Right ... I said in another post that I knew exactly what I was going to shoot for this post, and that I had to wait until the Sunday to get the picture ... well, this morning I drove to Glasgow, parked up and waited for the subject of my 'Speed' shot to arrive, which it did ... it parked up behind me, I was just about to get out the car with my camera and realised I didn't have it: it was at home, by the door where I knew I wouldn't forget it when I left! :shake:
So no picture of a classic Lamborghini I'm afraid. I got home and tried to think of something a bit less obvious to fit the theme. I made myself a cup of tea or two.

Wk5Speed.jpg

Not something you really associate with speed, but tea bags have made the tea-making process alot speedier than using loose leaf tea! Also the logo on the mug is for PistonHeads (a website for car enthusiasts), which has the motto 'Speed matters.' It took alot of shots to get one with a drip that I was happy with. I ended up with a very strong cup of tea

Things I learnt this week:
- I should start leaving my camera in the way of the door, not next to it: maybe then I wouldn't forget it!
- Old furniture can be recycled to make a heavy-duty lightbox
- I really shouldn't ignore what I learnt in previous weeks about leaving things ... :|

Thanks for looking

K.

Don't worry that you missed chopped, you can come back to that! Or play a joker or something . I found it quite a testing week myself to be honest.

Poetry, I very much like the perspective on this! Nicely done.
Really like the PP on street. Makes it look very antique. Works quite well for me.
As for speed, I laughed at the forgetting the camera story! It's very like something I'd do too. Maybe you should attach a little speaker to it that when it detects you walking past it says "MA MA"

Tea worked out well though. May not scream out speed, but hey, at least you haven't skipped it!

Yes one week later and I'm still cross at myself for forgetting the camera! I like your idea though  I know my picture isn't that obvious for the theme but it was all I could think of at short notice

Just in time this week! :D

I've had a bit of a hectic week as I'm currently getting ready to move house so I haven't had much time to think about this! My first idea was to go and photograph a shop front, as there's a shop in Edinburgh called 'Present' but I though that a bit too similar to my 'Poetry' shot, so instead I went along the more obvious route, but with a bit of a comic theme. I recently bought a wedding present for a friend and due to my needing cardboard boxes, I kept the box it came in. As you can see, when the delivery came it was opened in haste! (Luckily the contents were very well packaged).

Wk6Present.jpg

Things I learnt:
- Read labels on boxes before opening them!
- Be careful when packing things to move house - thankfully this particular box is a strong one because it weighs a tonne!
- Photographing metallic paper can be tricky when the light isn't good

Hoping to put more effort in for next week's theme :)

K.

nice interpretation of the theme.. like the upside down 'this way up' :)

good luck with the move :)

Good luck with the move Kay. I'm amazed that you've had time for photography at all.

Present made me smile, and there are some nice colours and textures in there.

Tea may not be obviously on theme, but your perseverance paid off and that's a lovely clean, crisp drop that you have there. p.s. I totally sympathise with you leaving your camera behind. I had a similar week for chopped - except I remembered my camera but forgot to charge the battery :bang:

Bit of a catch up for me, Kay.

Street: This looks very impressive. The processing suits those grand old buildings beautifully, and I love low povs like that.

Speed: Oh, I really sympathise - I leave things by the door so I won't forget them - and then do! You tea shot is excellent though, and extra marks for persevering when you must have been really disappointed not to get your intended shot.

Present: This made me smile. And I like the composition and the idea.

Best of luck with the house move - put your camera in a safe place. ;)

Jean

Thanks Sarah, much appreciated :) Forgetting equipment is so easily done isn't it? I'm trying to get back into the habit of taking a camera with me everywhere, a P&S takes up no room!

btw I'm still intending on trying the Street shot with a vignette, oncce I've worked out how to do it! :)

Thanks for commenting Jean, I'm glad you like the pictures :)
I like low angle shots; there'll probably be few cropping up in this thread :)
I'm pleased you like the tea picture too! :)

Really like your speed shot, with a nice bit of drip capture. :) Present seems to have been quite a tough one for lots of people. I have a theory...

Nobody wanted to do the obvious so we spent all week trying to think how to portray alternative meanings of 'present'. Finally it got to Sunday, we still hadn't come up with anything, so had to revert to the obvious. A hasty snap of a cardboard box, some wrapping paper, or a valentines present.

Roll on week 7 I say! :)

Thanks very much for the comments :)

Lee you're spot on with your theory, for me anyway!

I have an idea for Week 7 that is slghtly less obvious, I just need to find the right location :)

Kay, sorry I missed a couple of weeks...

Street, I like it, a gritty feel, and love the PP

Speed, an interesting take on the theme, and the drips are good and clear

Present, ;)... need to watch that opening boxes too quick... Well done for getting something in the midst of a move. Good luck with the move too.

Hi John, that's ok, thanks for looking in and taking the time to comment :)

I'm quite pleased with how the drip turned out, it took a lot of attempts to get one I was happy with. It's something I'l be trying again I think.

I'm still busy with preparing to move ... it's amazing how much junk I've accumulated! I'm away on holiday this weekend so it'll be nice to get a break from it! :)

It's a bit late this one ... but I have a good reason (honest!)

When I first saw the theme 'People' the immediate thought I had was to get a picture that said 'People' but that had no people in it. My original idea was to get a picture that showed the impact people had on the landscape - so I thought about landfill sites, power lines, quarries and suchlike.
I'm on holiday just now in Sutherland, and as I hadn't taken the picture I wanted by yesterday I had a look at some maps this morning, saw something that appealed, and took a pretty amazing drive round and went past Carn Liath, which is a Broch (a type of Iron-Age roundhouse; more here). I though this was a good illustration of an early settlement / the way Iron Age people lived:

Week 7: People

Wk7People.jpg

and in Black and White (which I think works better):

Wk7PeopleBW.jpg

Things I learnt:
- For a start, I knew nothing about Brochs before today!
- Sometimes it pays to travel a bit further than intended (this is at least 200 miles from home!)

I'm off now to see what's required for Week 8 ...

Thanks for looking! :)

Hi Kay,

Just clicking random 52 threads now to see what I've missed, and I've missed some good shots in this thread.

I particularly like Curves and Street. Especially street which I think is a powerful shot.

People: A shot about people with no people in it. What a good idea. I like your choice of subject (and thanks for telling me what it is..!)

I also prefer the B&W version. Do you have Photoshop/Elements/Lightroom? If you do, I think a bit of Infra Red treatment might work well with this. Remove the blues to make that sky as dark and foreboding as possible, and push up the greens to make the grass a bit lighter in the foreground. I could be completely wrong of course. I usually am :)

Totally with you on the "put the camer in front of the door" so you don't forget it. Been there. Done that.

Nice 52. Keep it up!

Ian.

I really like this, Kay, and I empathise with the People with no Peole in the shot philosophy (I've been there, too, last year )

I thought I'd prefer the b&w, but going back and looking again, I still think it's a cracking good conversion, but I'll vote for the colour - I haven't seen a sky like that for months, and it's a real treat.

It sounds as though you've enjoyed your holiday, and got an excellent non-people People shot. :)

Jean

Hi Ian, thanks for looking in and commenting. I'm glad you like the pics so far.

I've been using Paint Shop Pro, I don't know if it has an Infra Red treatment or equivalent but I think I know what you mean, I do like dramatic skies myself :)

Thank you Jean :)

I'm glad the 'People with no People' picture works for you aswell (I doubt the same thing will work with this week's theme however!). That was the cloudiest I saw the sky all day, it's been glorious, although the highest temperature I saw was 3.5 degrees - but that was a 13.5 degree rise from what it was first thing!

I've been having a lovely holiday thanks, I'm going home tomorrow though (back to the moving house and to work :()

Kay.

A lovely shot that still fits the theme. I really like the colour version, as the b/w loses quite a lot of detail in the foreground. However an IR style might work really well. Do you have a channel mixer in PSP? You could experiment by having 100% green, quite a lot of red and low, perhaps minus blue - don't worry about making it all add up to 00%
